The RMS Titanic was the world's biggest passenger steam ship when she set sail across the Atlantic on her first trip from Southampton, England to New York City on 10 April 1912. Titanic was one of three sister ships of the White Star Line shipping firm known as the Olympic-class ocean liners, which also comprised the Olympic and the Britannic. It was marketed as the most luxury ship to run on the North Atlantic.
First-class guests may enjoy a gym, plunge pool, Turkish bath, barbershop, electric elevators, library, restaurant, and café, among other facilities. No money was spent in creating a high-tech, luxury background for those willing to pay to cross the Atlantic.
However, four days later, the widely reported assertion that advances in shipbuilding and the vessel's sheer size rendered her almost unsinkable was cruelly contradicted. The ship struck an iceberg at 11.40 p.m. on 14 April 1912, sunk without a trace less than three hours later at 2.20 a.m. on 15 April, killing 1517 of the ship's 2223 passengers in what would become the most lasting picture of nautical disaster of all time.

The Titanic's destruction has long stood as a cautionary tale of man's war with nature. But why were so many people killed? Was this a terrible, unavoidable accident, or was it the result of human error?
