The Roman civilization is considered one of the greatest civilizations known to mankind. The Romans excelled in almost every field and made great progress in almost every field to our surprise. But, some of the things they did and some of the habits are very abhorrent to us. These things that you are about to learn now will make you happy that you have to live in this present age. So, let's begin.

In a way that is hard for us to believe, the Romans used urine in everyday activities. A better way was to use urine to clean their clothes. It was believed that their togas (an ancient Roman garment) would shine like a new garment after being washed in this way. It was a method similar to the "dry cleaning" we use today. A pot was placed in front of the houses and anyone could urinate in it. They even collected urine for this from public bathrooms. During this time, the Roman emperor Vespasian levied a tax on urine.
After this urine tax was imposed, the outraged Romans attached the name "Vespasian" to the urine collection vessels. Vespasian's son Titus learned of this. Alarmed, he asked his father why he had imposed a tax on smelly urine. Vespasian took a Roman coin and told Titus to toss it. After throwing the coin, Vespasian said to Titus: "Got it now? Money doesn't stink".
Another purpose for which urine was used was to cure diseases in animals. Sheep suffering from gallbladder problems were forced to drink human urine, and sheep suffering from respiratory diseases were instilled with urine through the nostrils. Bees and birds were also given urine. Human urine was a cure for bird flu.
They also used urine and faeces for tanning. They believed that skin soaked in numuhun urine was more supple than faeces. They were also used as fertilizer. There are reports of urine and faeces being collected and sold. As mentioned earlier, taxes were levied for this collection.
It was believed that after urine was given to the pomegranate tree, the fruit would be tastier and juicier.
The most disgusting way the Romans used urine was to whiten their teeth. They believed that using urine to rinse the mouth would whiten the teeth like pearls.
The Romans were famous for their sewage systems and public toilets. But it has now been revealed that these public toilets were very dirty. According to archaeologists, public toilets were never cleaned and were full of microbes. A special comb was used to remove lice, ticks and other insects in the toilet.
Most disgusting of all is how they cleaned themselves after using the toilet. A sponge attached to a wooden handle was used for this and exchanged among themselves, but like the toilets, they were never cleaned.
