In 1951, Marilyn Monroe attended a party at the Beverly Hills Hotel in a red dress. The "provocative", low-cut outfit drew the ire of a female journalist, who she called 'cheap and vulgar'. She added that Monroe looked better wearing a potato sack.
A few days later, Twentieth Century Fox took advantage of the situation and arranged a photo shoot in which Monroe was seen wearing a potato sack dress, designed especially for her. These pictures appeared in newspapers across the country.
