Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 — June 25, 2009) was a singer, composer, and dancer from the United States. He is considered as one of the twentieth century's most prominent cultural personalities, dubbed the "King of Pop." His contributions to music, dance, and fashion, as well as his publicized personal life, established him a global icon in popular culture across a four-decade career. Jackson impacted musicians of all genres; through stage and film performances, he popularized sophisticated dance techniques such as the moonwalk, which he named, and the robot. He is the most decorated individual musician in history.

Jackson, the eighth child of the Jackson family, made his professional debut as a member of the Jackson 5 in 1964, with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon (later known as the Jacksons). Jackson launched his solo career in 1971 while working at Motown Records. With his 1979 album Off the Wall, he established himself as a solo artist. His music videos, including as "Beat It," "Billie Jean," and "Thriller" from his 1982 album Thriller, are credited for breaking down racial barriers and converting the medium into an art form and advertising tool. He contributed to MTV's popularity and continued to innovate with visuals for albums like as Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book I. (1995).

He had 13 Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits (more than any other male artist throughout the Hot 100 period) and was the first musician to have a Billboard Hot 100 top-ten single in five distinct decades. The RIAA considers him to be the most successful solo music artist of all time. 15 Grammy Awards, 6 Brit Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and 39 Guinness World Records, including "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time," have been bestowed upon him. Jackson has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame once, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame one.
