This well was built by Maduwanwela Maha Mohottala in 1700 AD during the reign of King Wimaladharmasuriya II.
Later, during the reign of Sri Veera Parakrama Narendrasingha, Maduwanwela Wijesundara Ekanayake Abhayakon Mudianse had Sinhala tiles roofed and turned it into a permanent building.
During 1877-1905 AD, it is correct to say that it is a fully equipped pit with 121 rooms, 21 middle yards and 3 defensive walls.. Also a court hall is located here..
King Wimaladharmasuriya II assigned the land to Maduwanwela Wijesundara Ekanayake Abhayakon Mudali with a deed and he himself created this well.
But nowadays there are not 121 rooms but 42 rooms and 7 courtyards.
This pit has been renovated in several stages...
After the death of Maduwanwela Disaway, this estate was inherited by Mr. Sir Francis Molamure, the son of a brother of Disaway, who was the Speaker of the Constituent Assembly and the first Parliament....
Then after his death, his daughter Mrs. Sita Molamure got this.
But in 1964, Maduwanwela Valley and the Nda villages belonging to it were handed over to the government...

In 1972, Maduwanwela Valley was taken over by the Department of Science...
