Classic Bond
After the astounding success of Dr. No, Broccoli and Saltzman's next step as producers will be another cinematic adaptation of Ian Fleming's work. Their choice was the novel From Russia with Love. It was once cited by US President Kennedy as one of his favorite books.
In an attempt to capture Dr. No's unique mood and look, the producers brought back almost everyone involved in the first Bond outing (with the exception of mediocre composer Monty Norman, who replaced his ugly tunes with the great John Barry's score in his first "official" collaboration with the Bond series). . This included Broccoli's long-time collaborators Terence Young, screenwriter Richard Maibaum and of course Connery, the gruff Scotsman, all initially dismissed as a "lorry driver", who nevertheless gave a memorable performance as James Bond.
All of these possibilities combine to make this without a doubt the best Bond film of all time. In contrast to the over-the-top stories that are so quickly equated with Bond, From Russia With Love is a very realistic Cold War thriller full of sexual violence and pure excitement. Terence Young considers this his best Bond film and the film proves him right. It's full of stunning shots (famous close-ups of Romanova's lips and Bond saying, “Your mouth's the right size”) and really hot (by 60s standards) mystery sequences. Even rear projection, an often unfairly criticized technical gadget, works surprisingly well. Bond's train escape sequences have been criticized by many, but I think they are great, adding to the danger and excitement of the film. The helicopter chase is a particularly cinematic moment. (It's better than the North by Northwest sequence.) Bond and Romanova shoot into the foreground with the helicopter exploding in the background perfectly describing the entire film: danger, romance, violence.
As for the actors, Connery seems more confident and relaxed this time around, but as for his job, he's as ruthless and cold as Fleming originally envisioned the character. Lotte Lenia wonderfully portrays SPECTER mastermind Rosa Kleb ("...as Romenova says at one point) "a very despicable woman..." but legendary supporting actor Robert Shaw steals the show as a cold-blooded man with a psychosis. does
