Interesting facts about Maori culture in New Zealand

in blurt •  last year

About 750 years ago, the Maori people of Polynesia first set foot in New Zealand. New Zealand, named Aotearoa by Maori, later became one of the last inhabited landmasses in the world. Later in 1840, New Zealand became an official British colony, leading to a tumultuous history of colonization and displacement of natives.
However, today the New Zealand government is working to right these wrongs through reparations such as land restitution. Every February 6, the nation celebrates Maori traditions and culture on Waitangi Day.
Maori make up 14 percent of New Zealand's total population, and their traditions are a crucial part of authentic "Kiwi" culture and history. To truly immerse yourself in New Zealand, it's important to first learn a few things about Maori culture.

New Zealand has two main islands, the northern one is called Te-Ika-a-Maui and the southern one is Te Wai Pounamu.
Te Reo, the Maori language, was originally an oral language only. Instead of books and literature, they transmitted stories through songs (vita), legends and myths.
The haka, or war cry of the ancestors, is a ritual dance or challenge known throughout the world. It is done to show the pride, unity and strength of a tribe. Common actions include stomping feet and loud chants. Expressions and loud noises are meant to intimidate opponents when competing.
The marae, or communal ground, represents the place where Māori are and belong. These unique, carved buildings belong to separate whānau (family), iwi (tribe) or hapu (sub-tribe). Maraes are used as cultural meeting places for Maori celebrations, funerals, tribal events and even educational workshops.
Ta Moko: Traditional Tattoos
Maori tattoos, or ta moko, are an art that represents their respect for their tribe and culture. Each tattoo is expected to be one of a kind, as they represent a person's external wisdom, lineage and status within the tribe. If you ever have the honor of meeting a Maori, don't hesitate to ask about their tattoos. It is a great way to gain more insight into their culture and history.
Traditional cooking methods
Community is everything to Maori. To celebrate and spend quality time together, they organize hangi, or a huge feast usually made of chicken, lamb, pork, fish, and vegetables, slow-cooked in an underground oven for hours. The result is a tender texture of meat and a smoky and earthy aroma with every bite.
Mayori How do you say hello?
Hongi: Dear regards
Maori have a very unique way of greeting others called hongi (not to be confused with hangi). It is so unique and representative of the culture because it consists of two people pressing their foreheads and noses together while taking deep breaths with their eyes closed. It allows sharing a "breath of life" with the other person and meeting their souls.
Oral language with storytelling
As mentioned, te reo, Māori was a purely oral language. Naturally, Maori are great at telling stories. Their culture is based on legends about everything from wildlife to mountains, lakes, rivers and any other natural wonder New Zealand has to offer. These legends are told to teach lessons to young tribe members and are passed down through generations.
A special relationship with whales
Tohorā, in the Māori language, has a meaningful representation in Māori culture. Many oral Māori legends and stories involve interactions between humans and whales – and have always referred to them as mystical and sacred creatures. Whale watching is a common and sustainable activity that both foreigners and locals can enjoy while in New Zealand.
