Ganges Zumbi, African freedom fighter, born in Congo in 1630, enslaved and sent to Brazil to work as a plantation slave. Managed to escape, raised an army of enslaved Africans and founded his own kingdom of Palmares with a palace and court.
The river's name may have come from "Nganga Nzambi", an expression meaning "Priest of the Gods" in Kikongo, the language spoken in the Kongo Empire.
Ganga Zumba is a hero and freedom fighter central to the history and modern struggle of the Brazilian black movement, who led an alliance of "independent settlements" called Quilombo dos Palmares.
An area located between the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, Quilombo dos Palmares was founded in the late 16th century by Brazilian African slaves on the run as a form of resistance to European colonists and slavers.
Fugitive slaves, native Brazilians, and various dispossessed groups (such as Jews and Muslims) inhabited Palmares from around 10k to 20k throughout this period. (early 1600s - 1694)
This area became one of the first places in America where black slaves found freedom. For almost a hundred years, the blacks of Quilombo fought against their oppressors, especially the Portuguese who tried to colonize Brazil.
Zumba, as King of the Quilombo, led these attacks against the oppressors, and despite repeated threats from the colonial authorities, the Quilombo prospered as a fugitive slave and established a collective economy based on agriculture, trade, and communal land ownership.
Ganges ended up trying to make a treaty with the Portuguese that the quilombo would no longer accept fugitive slaves and would not fight with the Portuguese in order to permanently recognize their territory and grant freedom to the natives of Palmares.
The condition was that the Palmarinos moved to another place - the Kukau Valley. In the treaty, the Portuguese affirmed their acceptance of Zumba as the supreme leader of their people.
His nephew, Zumbi, the military leader of the settlement, disapproved and launched a coup against him. He chose resistance against the Portuguese.
Ganga Zumba will join Toxic Body later that year. The general belief is that it was done by Zumbi's side. Those loyal to the Ganga would march to the Kukau Valley to restore Palmares.
Unfortunately, they will be captured and re-enslaved. Zumbi directed his rebellion against the Portuguese to capture the territory of Palmares.
