The human body is a mysterious machine. Most of the time, human babies develop according to plan, but sometimes, something goes horribly wrong and the result is a curious medical anomaly. What is interesting are the methods used to care for and heal the human body. In our modern medicine, it's easy to look back at past medical practices with disgust and fascination. These photos related to medicine from the past show us how amazing the human body is and how medicine has evolved over time.

Of course, we've always been told that water and electricity don't mix, but would you believe that in the early 1900s, electric showers were used to treat a variety of ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis? Yes, medical technicians will submerge a person in a vat of water, or, as this photo shows, submerge their limbs and run mild electrical charges through the water. In fact, electrotherapy is an alternative medicine. It is still widespread in Japan today and you can find denkiburo, or electric pools, all over Japan. People use them to relieve arthritis pain or as a way to promote health in general.
