“Ellie Jones from Rhyl, Wales is one lucky girl who was given the opportunity to change her life forever thanks to her orthopedist and her surgeon. In a pioneering surgery, she transformed from a shy girl with facial disfigurement to a beautiful and confident woman and here's how it happened.
When she was 14, she went to an orthodontist to get braces. To her surprise, she discovered that her chin had not grown since she was 8 years old.
When Ellie was young, her teeth were slightly crooked and she needed braces to correct them. Instead, her orthodontist said she had a rare congenital facial deformity that prevented her jaw from developing properly as she grew up.
According to Emma Woolley, her surgeon at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, more than 100 patients visit the institution for jaw problems. But Ellie's problem was quite severe and the surgeon performed a pioneering operation that changed her life significantly.
She underwent two stages of maxillofacial surgery. The first stage was to correct her jaw deformity.
Also known as oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMF or OMFS), this procedure is performed to treat many diseases, injuries, deformities, and disorders of the head, neck, face, and jaw, as well as the hard and soft tissues of the mouth and face. The area Ellie Jones encountered was experimental, because such a deformity is rarely seen.
The operation involved cutting her jaw horizontally and vertically to transform it into a normal shape.'
As can be seen in the x-ray on the left, before surgery her chin was set far back where a normal chin bone should be. The fine outlines of her facial features show her chin lacking bone structure and her lips parted and protruding. In the x-ray on her right, her chin has moved forward slightly, which has also changed the shape of her lips.
She had to spend a month on a liquid diet during her recovery and after six months was able to participate looking and feeling better.
A year later, she underwent a second corrective surgery to correct her chin, which was also deformed.
The change in her appearance has changed the way she feels about herself, which in turn has made her more confident in everything she does. It even showed her ability to dance, which she could do better after the surgery. She now dreams of becoming a photographer to capture special moments in other people's lives and says she is thankful for her surgeon.
After checking that the goat was female, Richard said, "Every new birth is a wonder."
To the newborn goat. I said with a smile that we will name her Fridolina. Richard thought for a moment and said no, we should name her Ursi.
