"Last night, I learned a great lesson about America's patriotism, compassion and respect for your fellow man….I learned it from an 8-year-old little boy at a McDonald's in Shamrock, Texas.
A man and his wife walk among the French fries and chicken nuggets at the grocery store. The man was wearing a Vietnam Veteran's hat with several pins. I don't know that anyone saw him when he went in, or that they didn't notice his hat. But the little eight-year-old did. He asked his mother several times (three to be exact) if he could "go shake that man's hand and thank him," but she said no for fear of disturbing his dinner.
But mother allowed the fourth request. The little boy immediately goes up to the gentleman, says, "Sir, thank you for your service" and shakes his hand. The gentleman paused and said in a cracking voice, "You're very welcome, young man. Thanks for looking....You've made my day, maybe my whole week!" Everyone went back to eating, and before the boy left, the gentleman walked over and said, "Son, I wish I could give you this." It was his 1st Calvary pin worn on his hat. The little man said thank you and quickly took off his hat and his uncle attached the pin to his hat and ran to show his mother and aunt what the veteran had given him.
I don't know who the veteran who has seen all that one has fought for, is overcome with emotion. The little boy, for meeting a "real life hero" or for those who observed this interaction. All in all, it reminded me that no matter the place, time or situation, honoring our past and present war heroes and their selfless sacrifice is so important. So there are no words to say thank you to all those who shouldered the responsibility of protecting our country."
