The Banshees of Inisherin - The story of a strange friendship

in blurt •  2 years ago

How many times can the same person be asked the question "Did you guys hook up?" and how patient can the person be? Or can not knowing whether or not they are really hooking up lead to a lack of response to the question?

These may be easy to answer in universal and crowded settings, but difficult in remote and small settlements where everyone knows each other from birth to death. It is even more difficult when the small settlement is an island.

The year is 1920 and I'm sure it will be much more difficult given the pressures of the civil war. The place is the remote island of Inisherin in Ireland and the year is 1920!

The Banshees of Inisherin

I can't help but wonder how strange it would be or how much material for black comedy the friendship of two close, even inseparable friends who are trying to end their friendship. I say trying to end it because one of the parties wants to end it and the other wants not to end it.

I am aware that it is a strange story in itself, but it would not be surprising to see such oddities in small boring places.

At some point, you have patience and want to say, "Oh man, if you end it, end it", but on the other hand, you respect the effort of not wanting to lose a bond that is not easily established.

Because when it's not a poker game, but the feeling of friendship over the years, it may not be possible to answer all-in with all-in.

There are a thousand and one ways to express the changed feeling in the simplest way, but simply saying "you're boring" is simply making excuses.

Dozens of stories can be written at the end of a sentence that begins, "There is no more room for boredom in my life". Most of the stories will be fiction, few will be true, and all of the true ones will have been lived by a small number of people in remote corners.

Pruning your fingers like pruning a tree will perhaps help to better explain the black comedy, the humor or the madness that I want to describe. Cutting off a finger in every conversation, in every attempt to get closer, is punishing both oneself and the other person at the same time, but it seems funny to me.

I'm not laughing out loud, but I'm curious to see what surprises the point of madness that triggers me to watch more will bring.

You know how there are some moments that flash before your eyes like a movie screen, and they pass in a matter of seconds? When you combine the visuals you don't understand at that moment, you get the big picture and solve the whole event...

...and a seemingly absurd plot suddenly turns into a masterfully simple story. That's the story of The Banshees of Inisherin.

Made in 2022, Martin McDonagh is in the director's chair. The main characters of the story are Colm (played by Brendan Gleeson) and Padraic (played by Colin Farrel).
