It is a wonderful privilege to be alive and to be a man who grew up from being a boy. I am conscious of the fact that many that we grew up together are no more. The 16th day of May, was set to celebrate and reflect on the future of the Boy child in response to Dr Jerome Teelucksingh's request The International Boys’ Day started on 16 May 2018.
In a historic address, Dr Teelucksingh had this to say to buttress his point requesting for a day to commemorate and reflect on the struggles of the boy child.
“We need to save the Boy Child.”
We need to protect the boy child from the harmful influences of society. There is an urgent need to focus on the home and school in order to save the boy child. The boy child lives in a turbulent social environment that makes him vulnerable to a multitude of negative forces. If a boy child is neglected or fed a diet of hate and violence it is obvious he will develop into a teenager who is misguided and confused. And the next crucial transition into manhood will be even more difficult.
Reading the above address, reminds me of a boy that grew from his toddling years unto maturity with a clean-sheet of records of meekness, humility, love, obedience, yet expressing the absolute power and authority of God on earth. He is Jesus Christ. Bible records that the grace of God was upon Him.
39When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40And the Child grew and became strong. He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him. 41Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover - Luke 9: 39-41 (Berean Study Bible)
This brings me to the consciousness that hoping for the better future of the boy child starts from the initiation given to him. It all starts from whom we model for the boy child. Jesus is that perfect model that we should have every boy child look to and w'll have a future without strife, violence, rape and tyranny, amidst other vices.
Fathers must be conscious of taking the boy child to the place of the cross where they meet on a personal capacity with the saviour. It is pertinent that fathers tech them according to the tenets of God's word as was directed in Deuteronomy 6: 4-9.
4“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Fathers must be conscious of teaching the boy child love. Loving God first, then humanity. The boy child must be shown how to live after Jesus Christ in words and deeds. This teaching is not but talk but in deeds.
I see a future where the boy child shall not be known for violence and societal peril when the fathers would rise to the responsibility of presenting them to the cross. There is wisdom to help them grow in virtue when they have learnt from the meek and lowly Jesus.
May God help our boys to grow in wisdom and virtue - Amen.
