Scaling back on blockchain to focus on health and family

in blurt •  6 months ago

I can't justify continued heavy involvement in the Blurt-Steem-Hive blockchains. After 7 years of full-time effort, I am changing my strategy to spend more time with my wife and young children, and to manage my ongoing health problems. This notice is to inform anyone interested. I'm not asking for anything, and no action is required by anyone. Thank you.

Background

Back in 2017, I had already been a successful - albeit unpaid - content creator for a decade, and it seemed like blockchain blogging (Steem) was going to be a way to earn a living doing it. After a few years, and the move to Hive, it was clear that wasn't coming to fruition.

But it still seemed like I could make some pocket money by posting what I was already creating (for social media, for YouTube, for myself, etc), so I kept at it nonstop, and reinvested everything I made. When I finally made it big on Hive in 2022, the downvote cabal descended on me and wiped out any chance I had of ever earning money there, so I moved everything to Blurt. Now having lost 90% of that investment (despite full-time grinding for another 28 months), it is clear that my strategy has not worked. I input several thousands dollars worth of crypto, and 7 years of my life, to accumulate 1.1 million BLURTs with a current value of $1750. Just about every other possible investment in the world has done better.

"Money isn't everything!"

True. If there are other benefits of blockchain blogging, it may still be worth the time, effort, risk, and loss of privacy. There is only one such benefit for me - the blockchain provides somewhere to post, edit, and store letters, numbers, and other characters (text). Sure, there are countless other ways to do that now, but the blockchain is one more potential option. Other than that, everything done here is being done (generally better) on other platforms, websites, and programs. Blockchain has been around for 15 years, and has made an impact, but has not lived up to the wild predictions some had for it. Blockchain blog platforms are one example of something that hasn't panned out as promised/hoped.

For a while, I told myself it was still worth doing, because "I'm getting my important message out, and having my voice heard". It has been a tough reality call to admit that what I'm doing on Blurt is not reaching more than a few dozen people. And these are people who have already heard my message. I'm not really reaching anyone with this. Posting on the blockchain at this point is "for the record", and little else. Just reality, not trying to be mean.

Personally, the one tiny upside (somewhere to save text) does not justify the downsides and costs. Especially considering I've got 2 young kids, a crippled wife that is currently also having major health problems, and my own neurological and cardiac conditions. Everybody gets to make their own decisions about how and where they apply their limited time. I've decided I can't put much of mine into these blockchains any longer.

How I'm scaling back:

  • switching to a semi-manual (lazy) curation strategy
  • will only make posts when I have content to store (not compelled to create "regular" content)
  • no new blockchain projects, not pursuing a witness position, less participation in community discussions

Notice that I'm maintaining my investment in BLURTs, and keeping them all powered up. I even just powered up some more. Yes, BLURT is currently making new all-time lows (despite the overall crypto bull market we're in). But having lost everything (except enough for a few trips to the grocery store), I'm just going to leave it where it is for now.

My semi-manual curation strategy is going to be kind of lazy. That means I won't be hunting for new creators as much as I used to. And I won't be spending as much time reading through posts and deciding a vote % based on quality and effort. I'm going to pick a few people that put out solid content on a regular basis, and just vote 100% on everything they create. I'll manually go through my list now and then to be sure I'm not supporting junk. I won't be trying to optimize my curation rewards, despite having done a lot of research and posts about that over the years. I'll just stop by the computer a couple times a day, vote for my people, check my replies, and get back to life.

I'll do a post soon on the details of this new curation strategy, including sharing with you my main picks.

And yeah, I'm going from Blurt's top creator last year, to just one of the top group nowadays, to minimal posts/income going forward. Not feeling pressured to create regular content might actually allow me to put more time into stuff I actually care about, and the results might be better (just less often). But in general, I'll be putting less time into content-creation, something I mentioned in my recent YouTube video about stepping back my involvement. I want to focus on my upcoming heart surgery, trying to stay out of the ER in the meantime, and my young family.

I don't have support from relatives, and we haven't managed to find any friends in this remote Northern-Canadian town, so I have to step up and take care of everything myself. That means I've got less to give the world. I'm sorry, but at the same time, I realize I've given much more than I should have, for many years. Perhaps this change is overdue.

I doubt anyone cares, but this is here for the record. My best to everybody still grinding hard, any contacts I've made, and anyone who has supported me.

How to contact me

You can email me - drutter at protonmail is best. If you don't hear back, try again, because many attempts mysteriously disappear without a trace on their way to my inboxes.

Or leave a comment on my blockchain posts. I see all comments (unless you're on my ignore list of course), and respond to appropriate questions. Note: I can't respond on Hive, as it will be auto-downvoted by the cabal, sending my reputation toward 0, retroactively graying out all the work I've done for years.

I don't have any social media profiles. I'm banned for life on all Meta platforms, and I don't have access to "apps" because I won't use smart devices. That means I can't get popular chat programs like Facetime, Telegram, etc. I have been cancelled and shadowbanned by Google since about 2012, but continue to maintain my YouTube account (although my comments usually can't be seen by others).

If you have any suggestions for how somebody on a desktop PC can stay in touch with other people on the internet, after being censored and deplatformed, please (try to) let me know!

Now, to add a little colour (mostly green!) to this post, here are my latest garden photos...

My scarlet runner beans are growing well despite attacks from bugs. I heard there's a cutworm epidemic in the region. Apparently they're larva that live in the soil and feast on leaves during the night. I'm hoping their lifecycle finishes up before they do much more damage to my bean leaves! This is one that doesn't have any holes, but you can see plenty on the other photos, taken over the past few days:

I grow calla lilies each year in memory of my grandmother. They're coming up now and will bloom soon.

The pumpkins that looked so green and strong when I put them in are still small, and have become quite yellow. Looks like I'm not growing any pumpkins this year! My squash failed here last year too, so I'm thinking the weather isn't right this far North, or maybe I need to modify the soil for them?

Right next to the pumpkins are some sunflowers, which are looking healthier, but still not very big:

As a reminder, here's what it looked like in April 2023:

Real progress

Every day, I'm eating a big bowl of fresh organic lettuce and a handful of green peas from the garden. Over the next few months, I intend to be eating at least one full meal from the garden, every day. That's groceries I wont have to buy. In other words, my backyard garden is putting $20 to $50 into my pocket every week. For less than an hour of work per day, my garden "pays" me $100 to $250 per month, something no blogging blockchain has ever been able to do. And gardening comes with few costs, but many other benefits.

Thank you for visiting my garden, and my post. Please, take a pea before you leave! Enjoy.

And as always, grow in peace.

I’ve been doing this for the last year. I think we all
Wanted to give these sites a good chance for the potential but they either ended up more controlling and wef than fb and YouTube when it came to ones like hive, then none of them really improved or grew over the years only went backwards and it’s hard to see the advantage of them versus mainstream sites. I’ve been focused on YouTube for one year and not only am I starting to earn a few hundred quid a month it’s pretty locked in, so it’s always growing even if I’m not posting. I highly suggest giving YouTube a try or even rumble if that gets shut down. I do still put stuff here because If go out blogging and take photos and it’s nice to do something with them. But I don’t really see the benefits over the mainstream platforms anymore if they are controlled anyways, you’re earning less and it’s no more community driven. If anything I have a really nice community on YouTube growing over my multiple channels and for the most part even if they disagree, which is fine they are pretty chill about it. I’ve actually not witnessed that much toxicity and at least you think I’m getting paid if people agree or disagree with me because it drives off engagement. I hate the stuff about saying people should post ona. Site and not want money, sure money shouldn’t be your desire at the expense of your ethics or joy but you certainly need money and the entire premise of blockchain platforms was to earn for your time. I thought it was quite revolutionary at the time for smaller creators to buffer their income but i realise it’s probably better to just focus on the main ones that have huge audiences. I do regret not going to YouTube sooner but I guess I wasn’t really making videos then and everything happens in it’s right time. But totally understand you. I also stopped spending time back and forwards with ppl as it’s totally fine to disagree but no one is going to change their mind on anything from an online debate of back and forwards and it’s easier to just disagree and move on if you care about your free time and wellness lol

Haha thanks, good comment. I'm glad you're doing well on YT, making a bit of income now, sweet. I would have to start a new account if I wanted to go back there, my drutter account is totally cancelled, shadowbanned, censored, and locked down by an agent assigned to keep me under wraps. That would probably happen to any new account I made... but it's worth a try sometime! ; D

I think you could do one on your garden though and that journey. You can still do your other stuff on other platforms.

the problem seems to be if you were looking for an audience (or money)

i'm seeking interesting individuals

and perpetual web hosting on the cheap

I’m defo looking for money. 1000 percent. I wouldn’t do things I feel are unethical for money hence not being on hive but I do want to earn money for my content, I also want to be places I find enjoyable. That is why I’m on blockchain sites tho , as a package deal. I have way more connections on fb and lots of interesting chats so these sites are more about ooh you can do this and get paid . I am not so interested in creating free content when other platforms pay. It takes time. When you post on social someone’s making money off your content, at least get a part of it lol

and that's great, but blurt is probably not going to pay the billz

None of them pay the bills but I guess it all mounts up. But my point I guess is that I believe in these platforms more as a chance to create freedom for creatives so they can earn between selling paintings/ novels/ articles etc etc. we all have a different vision but that’s mine. Obviously you realise they take time to build but that’s the vision for me. Freedom of speech I’ve given up on a bit I feel as free on fb as most of these sites and don’t rly feel restricted there as just not focused on the money on Facebook and I have a huge audience there where tbh I say pretty much whatever I like and still have an account. I have a lot more people there so it’s probably more interesting rly for general chat . So for me these sites are the vision of being able to allow avenues for freelancers and creatives to make a side income. Obviously I wouldn’t post on ones like hive where one person can downvote and take away someone’s entire community rewards like that, that site was a whole new level of control.

it's pretty funny when hive is worse than facebook

  ·  5 months ago  ·   (edited)

Omg it’s way worse than Facebook and YouTube put together. Lol

At least on YouTube if you stay away from really overt topics and just post what you enjoy doing you don’t really have any issues. I did get one copyright take down on YouTube as the place didn’t like my review wasn’t totally positive but I challenged it and got the video back up. YouTube step aside rly and if the person trying to remove your video doesn’t take you to court in ten days the video goes back up. Facebook I find you can share whatever rly as long as you acknowledge they will flag a bunch of your posts every now and then and maybe shadow ban you for a few days, but that goes down a lot when you get rid of all the snitches who report you or they get rid of themselves. I’ve never witnessed as much censorship on any site in my life as I saw on hive. Unbelievable they say it’s not censored lol. Maybe the others would be as bad if they were smaller but too many ppl for them to rly take an interest in when they are not huge. Never seen any site where one or two ppl can get rid of all your earnings because they simply feel like it before and I’ve been on all the social media sites!

I understand, and have been thinking very much along the same lines!

I'll just stop by the computer a couple times a day, vote for my people, check my replies, and get back to life.

That's what I have been doing, both chains, and I am very happy. I have much more time in my life to sit and watch the world turn. I am calmer.

But I will miss your posts. Whenever I saw that you posted, I always felt a charge of delight, because I knew I'd get myself a good read, that your post would have been well thought out and of value to me and others.

I see you're still getting DV'd on Hive. How can someone new on Hive, who sees quality posts such as yours being DV'd, feel safe there? Clearly, this has nothing to do with spam, plagiarism, or misuse of stake, but is simply for spite. A bad look!

Like you, I don't use smart devices if I can help it (which is getting harder and harder, even just to have an email account) . I have a landline and use email to communicate. I don't think you gave quite enough info in your email address above for us to contact you.

Good luck with your surgery! When is it?

Thanks for saying that about my posts! I feel that way about any comments or replies from you.

You're right about it being a bad look for Hive. The downvote cabal whales have a lot of firepower. They can auto-downvote hundreds of smaller accounts like me and still have juice left over. It lets them decide who farms the profits and who gets nothing.

Next month... I am nervous but trying to shift that into excitement. Excited that it will soon be done and I won't be feeling like absolute crap 1/3 of the time, and won't be slowly getting worse toward total heart failure or stroke. I feel pretty decent (despite the nerve issues) when my heart is pumping normally. It's really only when the arrhythmia strikes that I get all the other symptoms like shortness of breath, reduced energy and concentration, leg swelling, etc. All that should go away, as well as the nasty side effects of the heart pill I have to take until the surgery. Looking forward to seeing how I feel in September! Assuming the world can hold together that long...

The world will still be turning. The bad entities are shriveling up. You will be healthier. September bodes well.

I agree with you.
Hello from the secret garden : )

I really like knowing you are there! Thanks for the info. I don't need a secret garden of my own, all of my old lady friends have one of their own for me to enjoy.

In other words, my backyard garden is putting $20 to $50 into my pocket every week. For less than an hour of work per day, my garden "pays" me $100 to $250 per month, something no blogging blockchain has ever been able to do. And gardening comes with few costs, but many other benefits.

Indeed.
Stay healthy (as you can), matey !

....may the dpos block chain avalanche implosion continue, with great haste - it's not fit for purpose.

It's YOUR blog. It's for you. Just post when you have something you want to have later as a reference. Like I do. I do not post unless I feel like it or have something I really want to share. I check in once a day sometimes every other day. Just to see what's going on with folks. Folks like you. Life is not here on these platforms. Just update us once in awhile. You and your beautiful family are always in my heart and prayers. You are resilient, clever, resourceful, amazing people.

Thanks buddy!! Good advice.

Oh wow, quite a deep post but I so feel you. Many old people in retirement homes often regret the time spent away from family chasing money in high powered corporate jobs or building businesses. I definitely support your decision of spending time with your children. The years go by so fast but the children will remember them for life.
I know , these blockchains will be here for years and am glad you will be posting whenever you can. Am sure one day when your kids read these posts they will be very appreciative of you, what you went through and the decisions you made in such a thankless world.
I am wishing you the very best in the upcoming surgery and thanking you for being one of the few people that interacts with me on my posts. I do enjoy the fitness lifestyle and will keep posting for as long as I can.
Keep being a strong support to your wife and children, family first always.
What am praying for is your health to turn around for better, that you have maximum strength ,a wonderful life ahead and that you can continue sharing your knowledge with many others. Stay blessed :}

this comment just to check my status on the ignore list
to be short , concise and positive
super that you are sticking around
posting just for the record is good enough
green part of the post is lovely - garden looks very well

take care

Thanks for the compliment!
I generally try not to ignore (they call it "mute" but that's not the right word for it) people just because of a disagreement. Hopefully I'm more mature than that... no guarantees though.
