Transportation to Colombo was a major issue to export crops grown in central hill regions when Sri Lanka was a British subordinate. As a solution to this, the construction of Sri Lanka railroad started in Dematagoda in 1858. The first steam train engine was brought to Sri Lanka in 1864 As the first railway route from Colombo Fort to Ambepussa, the coastal railway was also established in 1897.
Sri Lanka's first railway accidents occur in Katukurunda area of this coastal railway track. On March 12, 1928, the train which was running from Colombo to Aluthgama started its journey at 6.00 pm from Colombo railway station at 6.42 pm but arrived at South Kalutara railway station by 6.57 pm.
The train with the number 250 which came from Galle was scheduled to reach Kalutara railway station at 8.06 pm. The two trains were supposed to be transferred one to another in Kalutara, but due to the delay, the officers decided to transfer the two trains in South Kalutara. But the train from Colombo drove towards Aluthgama without proper message exchange between the station warrior, the regulator and the driver.
Around 8.02 p.m. train collided with a loud noise on a small corner bay near the 58th pole. There were 8 passengers and cargo stations in the train which was running towards Aluthgama. The other train is a cargo train. One train was driving at 20 mph when the accident happened and the other train was 35 mph. One railway engine was crashed and the other was on the railroad with severe damage.
12 people died in the accident and 09 dead bodies were in unidentified condition. Drivers of both the trains were also dead and the number of injured exceeded 50. The law enforced on those who were working irresponsibly. This first train accident which was a new experience for Sri Lankans is called a great tragedy at that time.
