We are going to talk about an iconic hero who faces almost everything. Known for her tragic and tumultuous life and her political views and unique physical features, Frida Carlo, a Mexican artist, draws the attention of art lovers not only with her paintings but also with her life story. Born July 6, 1907 in Coyoacán, south of Mexico City, artist Carlo adopted her birthday as June 7, 1910, the day the Mexican Revolution began.
Frida Carlo's life was full of misfortune. The first of these misfortunes was polio. She suffered only at the age of 6. This is why Frieda, who has one leg crippled by polio, is known as “Wood Legged Frieda”. A free spirit and at peace with herself, Frida didn't worry about it, and attended the National Preparatory School, one of the best at the time. Her interest and love for art, philosophy and literature grew stronger in this school.
Became school friends with the painter Alejandro Gómez Arias, José Gómez Robleda, Alfonso Villa. An anarchist at the time, Frida's strong and distinct personality began to emerge when she joined an anarchist literary group at school. Unfortunately, on September 17, 1925, at the age of 18, Frida was involved in a terrible car accident.
The bus she was traveling home from school collided with a tram and an iron fist drove her back through her pelvis. The accident sent her down a dark and painful path with a series of challenging treatments. After the accident, she had to live with excruciating pain in her right leg and spine. Her right leg suffered from polio and was amputated in 1954 due to gangrene. After 32 surgeries, not only Frida's body but also her soul suffered a lot.
A month after the terrible accident, the young artist came out of the hospital and began to paint to forget the hardships of her life and ease her pain a little. Drawing self-portraits using the mirror above the bed canopy, Frida delighted in painting herself. Her first self-portrait was "Self-Portrait in Velvet Dress" painted on canvas in 1926.
Frida Carlo started walking again in 1927 and became close with art and political circles. She developed close friendships with Cuban communist politician Julia Antonio and photographer Tina Modotti, who participated in political platforms together. Frida Carlo joined the Mexican Communist Party in 1929.
