Madison Cawthorn has made several headlines since his election to the United States House of Representatives last November.
Although causing controversy is on-brand for the Republican congressman, it makes many North Carolinians, including me, cringe with humiliation.
His anti-mask actions are now endangering the state's schoolchildren.
Students are prepared to return to classrooms after a year of primarily online instruction.
Cawthorn then joined hundreds of other parents at a tense Buncombe County school board meeting to oppose a mask mandate for children and instructors.
Cawthorn termed the mask demand "nothing short of psychological child abuse," accusing board members of "muzzling" parents.
His ranting continued on Twitter.
Cawthorn's reference to science is hilarious given that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises "universal indoor masking for all students, staff, instructors, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of immunization status."
Cawthorn's rage is not limited to school boards.
He's also gone after White House advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci on Twitter.
Cawthorn's foreboding warning of government overreach was spurred by the Biden administration's door-to-door vaccine promotion program.
"Think about the machinery they'd have to construct to be able to execute something that large," Cawthorn told the Conservative Political Action Conference. "Then consider what those mechanisms may be utilized for." They might then go door to door stealing your firearms. They could go door to door and steal your Bibles."
Bailey Pennington, a spokesperson for the state Department of Health and Human Services, told the Associated Press in an email: "We are employing numerous outreach strategies — including door-knocking — across the state to ensure that people have the information that they need about vaccinations and can get them."
