Like other parts of Sri Lanka, Matara is a city where Muslims have lived in large numbers since the past. The history of Matara Islam dates back to the Sinhalese dynasty. The Muslims of Matara, who maintained a very close relationship with the Sinhalese, once fought a massive battle against the Dutch at Weligamadi. For their religious needs, they call this great mosque near Matara Nilwala Ganga Fortegoda Idikala as Matara Mohaiddin Mosque. The church, which was very small during the Portuguese rule, was recreated during the Dutch rule in 1760 according to the Turkish architecture. The Dutch used the architecture of this great mosque in the creation of the Matara Clock Tower. It is said that the clock tower was built in 1765 according to the Turkish architect and it is said that the architects created the renovation work of this mosque in a way that beautifies the city of Matara. The main buildings in Matara at that time were this great mosque and the clock tower. It is beautifully displayed in the distance in white color. Just like the Taj Mahal in India, the mosque and the clock tower were restored in 1885 during the British rule. But here it is mentioned that no changes were made to the original model during these modifications.
