Adolf Hitler, the head of Germany's Nazi Party, was one of the twentieth century's most powerful and infamous dictators. Beginning in 1933, Hitler used economic hardships, social unrest, and political infighting to seize total power in Germany.
After Germany invaded Poland in 1939, World War II broke out, and by 1941, Nazi troops had seized much of Europe. Hitler's violent anti-Semitism and obsessive pursuit of Aryan supremacy spurred the extermination of about 6 million Jews, as well as other Holocaust victims. In April 1945, once the war's tide turned against him, Hitler committed suicide in a Berlin bunker.
