This incident happened 12 years ago now. Back in 2009. I wrote AL and went to my mother's village waiting for results. Kandy Galagedara. There are 25 kilometers of Vitara to Kandy town. So that's where the village is. In those days a new monk came to the village temple and the monk went to do the village temple in a new way. This is the new style. Katina savura is there for shift in every house. That family should perform Buddha pooja. Other people in the village should go to that house. The people who come there should be food and drink from that family. Going to one house like that. Then the other households are going to that house. Helping that family members to cook and make tea. Shouldn't we give food and drink to the people who come.
Food was the buffet way.
Then there was a family in a house near our mother's house in the village. Mother daughter son of that family. The daughter is about 10 years old and the son is about 1 year. Father did the hire. Coming back after drinking in the evening. A family who was at the peak of poverty in that family. My grandma, me and little brothers are going to help the people in the house when the Katina shif is transferring to shif. Because others came when we had it in our house. Everyone in the other village is relatives near or far. All the same family, a village that was built separated. Didn't come from outside. It was like that in the past.
So when we shift to every house that family comes too. Mother, son and daughter. I saw in two three houses and I heard that mother distributing two big poisonous rice to daughter and son. Then the daughter says, "Oh mother enough, I can't eat this much. Then the mother says, "Eat girl, you have to eat like this only today." Then the daughter will shake her head and eat. I seen those days that daughter and son eat until tears come. Now when I see people who don't eat and drink, I remember the faces of those two kids.
So friends, there were people in this country, in our village, near our house, in our next door without eating and drinking. Today is not yesterday. Been in this country forever. There were people who ate one meal with one vegetable all day, there were children. Not just today, I was before this huge economic downfall. Was there 20, 30, 60-70 years ago. But we didn't see, we didn't searched, we did not work. We didn't want to. Why didn't we have a problem? We earned and we ate. We could have eaten. We didn't feel until we left our class. That's where we went wrong.
