Portimão Beaches - It´s Portugal but it looks like Australia

in blurt •  3 years ago

Every time I walk at any beach here on the Algarve in Portugal I feel like I´m in Australia. The south coast of Australia in particular looks similar. The similarity of the beaches of Portimao to those on the famous Great Ocean Road is really amazing.

We've been to Portimão several times, but mostly just for shopping and never really on the beach. Especially not when there is no human soul there and you can admire the full splendor of these beaches, like this past saturday when we went down to some of the most beautiful beaches on the Algarve.

This is the perfect spot to start a beautiful weekend stroll along the beaches here. Start here at Praia dos Três Castelos and you can walk all the way to the famous Praia da Rocha, that is absolutely packed during the summer season. Before you go down the steps to the beach to admire the isolated rock formations in the sea, have a look from the top. The colors are absolutely amazing from up here.

Down at the beach it is terribly beautiful, if you can say that. It actually looks unreal sometimes as the contrast of sand, ocean and sky is too good to be true. It was low tide so the beach looked even bigger. Walking on the beach down here reminded me of our trip to the 12 Apostels on the Great Ocean Road in Australia.

The Três Castelos look huge from down here and with the tide that low you can even walk around them or underneath them.

The best part about beaches like this one or the Benagil Beach further east are the many tunnels and holes in the sandstone that make perfect photography scenes.

If you´re lucky you can find some beautiful and big shells here, like we´ve found a few weeks back in Lagos. This time there were only small ones.

From here it´s only one last sandstone tunnel to reach the big touristy Praia da Rocha.

There are several wooden paths that will lead you up again to the promenade. So on the way back we decided to walk above this amazing piece of nature and to admire it again from above, enjoy a coffee with a great view and discover some more or less beautiful art.

I really asked myself why buildings like the painted one are not bought up, renovated and used. The location is undoubtful priceless. Oh, I think I answered my own question with this sentence :)
