Every time you think that you have seen it all you discover something new. When we first visited the Praia do Canavial, a more or less hidden beach on the southern tip of Lagos at the Algarve I already noticed that there is another pathway I want to discover one day.
The access to the path that leads you to that amazing beach is a bit tricky to find and I found it randomly. The narrow, dusty way down to the beach is not that easy and probably not made for everyone, but once down you realise it was worth the risk of some scratches.
Halfway down to the beach there is fork that brings you on another track. Last time I could not see where it leads one to, but yesterday we went to discover it. It is yet another part of the endless hiking track here on the Algarve.
Once you managed all the steps on the photos above you will reach the fork, where another track leads you through a tunnel of bushes and trees.
From here the fun starts as you need to climb a steep little hill. Luckily one day someone decided to work in some stairs to make that climb easier. It really feels a bit sketchy, especially with such old, worn sneakers like mine. The underground is slippery and the path is narrow, so you should really watch your step.
Once you´ve reached the top you will have breathtaking views onto the open ocean and the Praia do Canavial, like in the first photo of the post.
Now it is an easy track and you can keep on walking with the ocean to your left all the time. It was amazing weather and the water looked absolutely inviting. The waves that were rolling in made me want to jump into the water immediately.
After a few more steps we could see Praia de Porto Mos, my home beachbreak, in the distance.
Now, in the mid of winter, finally everything is getting greener and greener and flowers are blooming, what makes it even more beautiful.
From here onwards you can easily reach Praia de Porto Mos, where a new section of the hiking track starts that leads you all the way to Praia da Luz. You see, it´s endless and it´s absolutely beacutiful.
On the way back I took some more photos as the light was getting better and better. In some places the Algarve looks like Arizona. The barren rocks in connection with the plants just look great.
All in all, this short but tricky hike was way more than I expected from my monday afternoon. It's always better to go out with little or no expectation and then let yourself be surprised.
