Stone carving - Kandyan kingdom - Sri Lanka
Hello Friends ,
Today I'm going to share some magnificent stone carving photographs I captured in my recent visit to Kandy - Sri Lanka. Stone carving is not a simple art. The artist has to put lot of effort and time to complete such quality carving with lot of details. These carvings can be seen at the Temple of Tooth. These are only few and there are thousands of different carvings if you notice carefully.
These carvings are from stone columns in the palace. There are hundreds of stone columns with four of these carvings in each side of the top. It's a wonderful work of ancient artists.
Most of the carvings are near the hall where the Tooth Relic of Loard Buddha is located.
The lower floor where the tooth relic is placed, is knownas lower storey or The visitor finds in here 20 pillars, made of stone and beautified with carvings. Thereis also a stair case leading to upper storey from the lowerone. One passes the silver-carved prior to entering the upper storey. on either side of theare two statues of lions, made of stone. In the lower storeyis a shrine room belonging to Kandyan era. source
This carving is called the "Muragala" . It's an very common carving in most of the Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka.
The earliest muragala date back to the early period of the Anuradhapura Kingdom (approximately 1st century A.D).Over time, the architects switched to the use of stone, as it was a more enduring material. The next stage in the evolution of the guard stones was the inclusion of carvings, however it has been difficult for archeologists to determine exactly when these changes began to take place.source
According to this source these is more history for guard stone before the kandyan kingdom.
Hope you enjoyed the article.
Thank you
