According to information reported by AFP, On Tuesday (1/6/2021), since December Bangladesh has moved 18,000 of the 100,000 refugees planned to the low-mud island of Bhashan Char from the Cox's Bazar region, where about 850,000 people live in slum and cramped conditions. Most of them have fled a brutal military offensive in neighboring Myanmar in 2017 which UN investigators have concluded was executed with "genocidal intent".
Thousands of Rohingya are currently protesting Monday against living conditions on a cyclone-prone island off the coast of Bangladesh. The beach is a place reserved specifically for Rohingya.
The protests on Monday involved up to 4,000 people, police said, and coincided with an inspection visit by officials from the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR).
"The Rohingya who were there became unruly when UNHCR representatives landed (on the island) by helicopter today. They broke glass in the warehouse by throwing stones. They went to the police. Their demand is they don't want to stay here," said the police chief. local Alamgir Hossain told AFP.
A Rohingya man confirmed to AFP that the bricks were thrown and police prevented them from entering the building where UNHCR officers are located.
An international rights activist said police used batons to disperse the protesters. Citing Rohingya sources, he said some of the protesters were injured.
Then the police dismissed the claim
A police spokesman said Rohingya protesters attacked officers, wounding several of them. They also damaged cars on the island, he said.
The United Nations refugee agency said in a statement it was "deeply concerned about reports of refugees injured during today's events on the island. We regret that those affected are reported to include children and women."
"The UNHCR delegation was able to meet with a large group of refugees and listen to the various issues they raised, which will be discussed further with the Bangladeshi authorities," the statement added.
The delegation is scheduled to visit a Rohingya refugee camp Tuesday in Cox's Bazar before returning to Dhaka to meet senior government officials.
