Hacia fines de los años sesenta y principios de los años setenta comenzó a surgir en todo el mundo, pero especialmente en el Reino Unido en Europa y en los EE. UU. en América un género muscial nuevo que reconocía sus orígenes en algunas variantes del rock clásico como el llamado blues rock, el hard rock y también al llamado -por algunos- rock psicodélico.
Se lo llamó Heavy Metal o "metal pesado" en la jerga popular por el sonido fuerte de sus guitarras, a veces algo distorsionado, ritmos fuertes, el bajo con una presencia más significativa que en los restantes géneros musicales, arreglos melódicos, una exquisita técnica instrumental y una primera voz aguda y hasta -a veces- gutural.
No hay un consenso cierto sobre cuál fue la banda "fundadora" de este nuevo subgenéro musical. Algunos críticos se lo atribuyen a Deep Purple otros a Led Zeppelin mientras que un sector minoritario (dentro del cuál me incluyo) le atribuyen este mérito a Black Sabbath una banda formada en Birmingham en 1968.
Pero no es mi intención hacer una reseña del Heavy Metal sino de hablarles de una de las mejores bandas de Heavy Metal que he sentido en mi vida: Rhapsody en sus orígenes, Rhapsody of Fire en la actualidad después de haber tenido que cambiar su nombre por motivos legales.
Towards the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies a new musical genre began to emerge all over the world, but especially in the United Kingdom in Europe and in the USA in America, which recognized its origins in some variants of classic rock such as the so-called blues rock, hard rock and also the so-called - by some - psychedelic rock.
It was called Heavy Metal or "heavy metal" in the popular jargon due to the strong sound of its guitars, sometimes somewhat distorted, strong rhythms, the bass with a more significant presence than in other musical genres, melodic arrangements, an exquisite instrumental technique and a high-pitched and even - sometimes - guttural first voice.
There is no certain consensus about which was the "founding" band of this new musical subgenre. Some critics attribute it to Deep Purple, others to Led Zeppelin, while a minority (in which I include myself) attribute this merit to Black Sabbath, a band formed in Birmingham in 1968.
But it is not my intention to review Heavy Metal but to tell you about one of the best Heavy Metal bands I have ever felt in my life: Rhapsody in its origins, Rhapsody of Fire nowadays after having had to change its name for legal reasons.
Los orígenes. / The origins.
Rhapsody es una banda italiana, triestina para ser más exactos. Y hago esta aclaración porque Trieste -una región del norte de Italia- tiene un origen en su mismo nombre mezcla de esloveno, alemán y friulano.
Si tuviéramos que definirla podríamos llamar a la música que hacen como Power Metal Sinfónico. Ha sido desde el inicio una banda pionera en su género, innovadora, creadora de un estilo musical propio.
Fundada por Luca Turilli (leader del grupo y guitarra) y Alex Staropoli (teclados) pronto se les agregó la voz estupenda de Fabio Leone capaz de imprimirle a las canciones un estilo vocal que va desde el de un tenor, una voz melancólica o llegado el caso hasta gutural cuando el texto de las canciones es de tono épico.
Los arreglos musicales son amplios e incluyen obras de cine y de la ópera, elementos barrocos y clásicos con una marcada influencia de las obras de Vivaldi, Bach, Paganini entre otros autores de música clásica.
Después de una primera etapa formativa Turilli y Staropoli bajo el nombre de Thundercross forman la banda y agregan a Daniele Carbonera en la batería y Christiano Adacher en voz y coros. Graban un primer album que hoy en dìa es una reliquia, material coleccionable para seguidores.
Al album lo llaman Land of Immortals y se imprimen pocas copias. Tenía solo cuatro canciones ni siquiera bien registradas.
Al año siguiente graban Eternal Glory un album con 7 canciones, algunas de las cuáles hacen parte del primer disco.
En 1996 se une a la banda Fabio Leone que hasta ese momento era el vocalista de Labyrint y la banda de a poco comienza a adquirir un estilo particular.
Turilli, Staropoli y Leone junto con Furlan que se había incoporado como baterista y Carbonera lanzan lo que puede ser considerado y primero y verdadero album completo de Rhapsody, o su album debut: Legendary Tales, con diez canciones y una introducción a la Emerald Sword Saga, un sencillo.
Rhapsody is an Italian band, from Trieste to be more precise. And I make this clarification because Trieste -a region in the north of Italy- has an origin in its very name, a mixture of Slovenian, German and Friulian.
If we had to define it we could call the music they make as Symphonic Power Metal. It has been from the beginning a pioneer band in its genre, innovative, creator of its own musical style.
Founded by Luca Turilli (band leader and guitar) and Alex Staropoli (keyboards) they were soon joined by the wonderful voice of Fabio Leone, capable of imprinting on the songs a vocal style that goes from a tenor, a melancholic voice or even guttural when the text of the songs is epic in tone.
The musical arrangements are extensive and include works of cinema and opera, baroque and classical elements with a marked influence of the works of Vivaldi, Bach, Paganini among other authors of classical music.
After a first formative stage Turilli and Staropoli under the name Thundercross form the band and add Daniele Carbonera on drums and Christiano Adacher on vocals and backing vocals. They record a first album that today is a relic, collectible material for fans.
The album was called Land of Immortals and few copies were printed. It had only four songs, not even well recorded.
The following year they record Eternal Glory an album with 7 songs, some of which are part of the first album.
In 1996 Fabio Leone who until then was the vocalist of Labyrint joins the band and the band slowly begins to acquire a particular style.
Turilli, Staropoli and Leone together with Furlan who had joined as drummer and Carbonera release what can be considered the first and true full-length album of Rhapsody, or their debut album: Legendary Tales, with ten songs and an introduction to the Emerald Sword Saga, a single.

Pero el verdadero éxito de la banda es con Symphony Of Enchanted Lands la segunda parte de la saga y obra complementaria de Legendary Tales, un verdadero clásico del epic metal. Es este disco el que los catapulta a la consideración mundial.
La producción de este disco es fenomenal. La actividad coral está presente en casi todas las canciones. Coros en ruso dirigidos por Don Kosaken, Coros Sagrados bajo la dirección de Andreas Lamken y otros coros en los que participan los propios integrantes le dan un matiz épico y espectacular a cada canción. Epic Furor (que abre el disco) y Eternal Glory son dos obras maestras de la música Power Metal.
Ensamble de cuerdas con violines, violas, violoncelo, clavicémbalo, mandolín y balalaika entre otros contribuyen a darle al entero album una atmósfera surrealista donde duendes, hadas, elfos y otras criaturas de los bosques medievales encantados parecen unirse al fragor de la batalla en cada nota musical.
En el 2001 deciden terminar esta "saga gótica" con Power of the Dragonflame el quinto album de la banda, con canciones más desgarradoras que preanuncian el final trágico y desgarrador de la saga como When Demons Awake y Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness.
De ahí en más y alternando algunos integrantes la banda sigue activa publicando un album cada 2-3 años luego de prepararlo meticulosamente y hasta en los más mínimos detalles.
Luca Turilli se separa y crea su propia banda. De los fundadores iniciales queda solo Alex Staropoli, pero la calidad y el estilo siguen intactos.
Nunca hasta ese entonces la fusión entre la música metal con el barroco-clásico había sido tan perfecta.
But the real success of the band is with Symphony Of Enchanted Lands the second part of the saga and complementary work of Legendary Tales, a true classic of epic metal. It is this album that catapults them to worldwide consideration.
The production of this album is phenomenal. The choral activity is present in almost every song. Russian choirs conducted by Don Kosaken, Sacred Choirs under the direction of Andreas Lamken and other choirs in which the members themselves participate give an epic and spectacular nuance to each song. **Epic Furor (which opens the album) and Eternal Glory are two masterpieces of Power Metal music.
String ensemble with violins, violas, violoncello, harpsichord, mandolin and balalaika among others contribute to give the whole album a surreal atmosphere where goblins, fairies, elves and other creatures of the enchanted medieval forests seem to join the din of battle in every musical note.
In 2001 they decide to finish this "gothic saga" with Power of the Dragonflame the fifth album of the band, with more heartbreaking songs that foreshadow the tragic and heartbreaking end of the saga as When Demons Awake and Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness.
From then on and alternating some members the band is still active releasing an album every 2-3 years after preparing it meticulously and even in the smallest details.
Luca Turilli separates and creates his own band. Of the initial founders only Alex Staropoli remains, but the quality and style remain intact.
Never before had the fusion between metal music and baroque-classical music been so perfect.
