Today's post is really a continuation of yesterday's post about visiting Tintagel in the "County of Cornwall" in England. I still have so many more great photos to share of the beautiful Cornish Coast & surrounding green landscape.
Tintagel is a picturesque coastal village located in North Cornwall, England. It is renowned for its dramatic and rugged coastline, steeped in history and legends. Here's some more information about the English coastline near Tintagel:
The coastline around Tintagel is characterized by stunning cliffs, rocky outcrops, and breathtaking sea views. The area is part of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and it's easy to see why. The combination of high cliffs and crashing waves creates a dramatic and impressive landscape that attracts visitors from all over the world.
Tintagel Castle (mentioned yesterday) is one of the main attractions of the area, perched on the high cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The castle is associated with the legend of King Arthur and is believed to be the birthplace of this mythical English King. The ruins of the castle date back to the medieval period, and visitors can explore the remnants of the ancient fortifications while taking in the stunning views of the coastline.
The "South West Coastal Path", which runs along the entire coastline of Cornwall, also passes through Tintagel. This long-distance walking trail offers fantastic opportunities for hikers to experience the rugged beauty of the cliffs, discover hidden coves and beaches, and spot various wildlife along the way.
The coastline around Tintagel features a mix of sandy and rocky beaches. These rocky shores are perfect for exploring rock pools during low tide, and they often reveal an array of marine life, such as crabs, sea anemones, and small fish.
Below the cliffs of Tintagel Castle lies Merlin's Cave, a dark and mysterious cavern that can be accessed during low tide. According to legend, the cave was once the lair of Merlin the wizard, adding to the area's rich history and folklore.
The coastal waters around Tintagel offer opportunities for various sea activities, including surfing, and kayaking. Adventurers can enjoy the thrill of exploring the rocky coastline from a unique perspective.
The Tintagel coastline is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Visitors may spot seabirds such as puffins, razor-bills, and guillemots nesting on the cliffs, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin or seals playing in the waves.
It's essential to approach the cliffs and coastal areas with caution, as they can be steep and treacherous. It is advisable to stay on marked paths and respect any safety warnings to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to this stunning stretch of the English coastline. Always remember that it's a very long drop down into the sea from these high cliffs. Many people have been killed (over the years) by simply walking too close to the edge, especially in high winds!
