Faiz Ahmed Faiz: A life long marxist who led the prayer few days before his death.

“Faiz was a man who defied stereotypes. A well-known Marxist, he, however, led prayers once in Kala Qader, some 100 kilometres from Lahore, at a mosque built by his father. It surprised many who had known him as an agnostic. (The mosque, to this day, has a Persian na’at, or song in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, engraved on it. The na’at was composed by Faiz.) A day later Faiz died and thousands of people turned up to pay their last respects. The mourners turned from a trickle to a flood, with politicians and military generals also joining the mile-long funeral procession.” (Article by Ziya Us Salam).

Once in the later stage of his life he was asked by a journalist, ‘if he regret anything in his life?’ He replied; ‘unable to memorised the Holy Quran’.

‘Major Ishaq, who was a companion of Faiz, mentions that when they were jailed together, ‘Faiz famously taught Quran and Hadees to the prisoners in the Hyderabad jail. Faiz himself mentions that a colonel explicitly asked him, why he was teaching Quran when he was an atheist. When Faiz clarifies that he is a Muslim, the colonel starts appreciating his Quranic lessons.’ (Rudad e Qafas by Major Ishaq)
