She's in my street! She was like me Cheerful and strong Expectant in her ways

On her face were the hues of life The contours of her body – A tourist attraction Didn't she draw men to senseless gazes? Didn't necks turn ceaselessly Paying obeisance to her presence?

She was like me Doing things her ways Borrowing no aide Here she is Fagged, pale and shortened!

Wasn't she straight before? Now she's bent and bent for life, Walking three-legged Now a tripod. Like a tendril she culls on that staff; Her feet shivering like a toddler's. Hold her lest she falls!

On that beautiful face is life's Map tattooed; all black hairs Whitened like snow – harbingers of the call. The clarion call to dance; willy-nilly, The dance of the spirits. Now she's only a waiter, waiting and waiting For the end of time.
