The FDA's War Against Sleep
Why There Isn't a Cure for Insomnia
A Midwestern Doctor
Jun 02, 2024
Story at a Glance:
•Proper sleep is one of the most important things for our health, and when it is disrupted, many severe issues consistently emerge (e.g., heart attacks, psychiatric illnesses, car accidents, fatigue, diabetes, cognitive impairment, or dementia).
•Unfortunately, poor sleep is an epidemic throughout our society. This is in part due to the importance of sleep not being understood (e.g., sleep is essential for learning yet educational programs like medical training sleep deprive students) and in part due to the fact the existing sleeping pills are sedatives which block the brain’s ability to have healthy sleep.
•In 1964, a sleeping medication hit the market that was remarkably effective for a variety of conditions (including insomnia) and hence profoundly improved the health of its recipients. Because it threatened so many different drug markets, once it reached America in 1990, the FDA in collusion with the media launched a ten-year take down of it, which in many regards was almost identical to what they did to ivermectin. It was successful, and very few people are even aware that this drug exists or that the many of sleeping disorders we face are easily treatable.
•In this article, we will review the data that illustrates the harms of poor sleep, the common causes of poor sleep, and the most effective treatments we have found for sleeping disorders that are still available to the public.
Gamma-Hydroxy-Butarate
While most of the sleeping medications are unsafe and ineffective drugs that are best avoided, one actually worked and frequently produced miraculous results. In turn, I know of numerous cases where my colleagues prescribed it to chronically ill patients with challenging conditions (e.g., non-restorative sleep is one of the classic symptoms of fibromyalgia) who almost completely recovered once they received it.
That drug, originally developed in 1874, is gamma-hydroxybutyrate, and in 1964, it began to be marketed in Europe as an intravenous anesthetic but never quite caught on due to its unusual properties. On one hand, it is an ideal anesthetic as:
•It slows the heart rate without creating a loss of blood pressure.
•It doesn’t irritate the veins.
•It doesn’t suppress the respiratory centers in the brain.
•It relaxes the muscles.
•It induces sleep without reducing oxygen consumption.
•It protects tissue from injury due to blood loss (e.g., during hemorrhagic shock) or from reperfusion injuries after a temporary loss of the blood supply.
•It permits an easy reduction and maintenance of the body temperature and reduces the metabolic demands of the brain.

Poor sleep (insomnia) is like stress.... they have 2 main effects:
Stress and insomnia are ALWAYS bad. Some things (most things) have pros and cons, but not stress or insomnia. It's always better to have less, and always worse to have more.
But like you pointed out, we don't focus on these things. In fact, we pretend they are non-issues.
The world would be a healthier place (with less spent on healthcare) if people could just sleep better and be less stressed.
I've been running on 4-5 hours per day for 8 years now. I have a lot of health problems, and more all the time, but nobody cares about the insomnia.
I stopped drinking alcohol & coffee 2 years ago and have noticed considerable improvement in my sleep cycle too. 🖖
I still drink coffee in the morn. But never was an alcohol drinker. Tried once to quit coffee - by the end of the week My head heart so badly I was walking into walls thinking I was going through a door. I said, F it. I'm having a cuppa. And one cup and I was fine.
Never tried again.
Gosh, I wish I had something like that I could quit, but already did that in 2016. No nicotine either. Boooooorinnnggg... lol
No surprises there. Clearly, the FDA opts for drugs that cause the most harm. They support those drugs until there is no longer a lot of money to be made on them. Oxycodone is a good example. Super effective for pain, with very few side effects other than the possibility of addiction. Good prescribing practices would greatly reduce that risk, and the patients would suffer less pain. But oxy was very cheap, so out with oxy, and in with designer drug gabapentin, to take in many cases forever, which will be shown to have been extremely dangerous down the line. DMSO is another safe drug that is of enormous benefit.
If possible, do not take any drugs.
There are other ways to improve sleep, that many can do, that do not involve taking any substances at all. Stopping alcohol for one. Eating excellent, non-toxic food for another. Getting sunshine without sunscreen. Homeopathy can be very effective with no chance of negative side effects.
I will have to look into DMSO next, I've seen it mentioned but never researched it. 🖖
If it's good for Us, They make it illegal or avidly hide it. Money motivates the most marvelous manifestations!
Glad I am zero to sleep in 60 seconds and sleep 7-9 hours a night.

Your lucky, it still takes me about an hour at least to fall asleep each night. 🖖
Yeah, I have seldom had any issues going to sleep. Sure, a couple or three times a year, but... Surely not regularly. Sorry to hear it takes You so long!

Nice to see your getting out and about, that rig looks fun.
My first real job at age 13 was being the bicycle mechanic at Country Cycles, the local bicycle & skateboard shop in Cross Lanes, WV... Seems only fitting to return to my roots eventually. 🖖

I call it the T.U.R.Q.
Technically a Utility/Recreation Quad.
It comes in at a reasonable Base Price. It is a single person vehicle not tied to the same motor vehicle restrictions and licenses. ABQ has an affinity for these vehicles...
I foresee a Private Dealership CO-OP working around this platform to design a few different models, organize dependable services based on their use, and coordinate the maintenance. This would look somewhat like your Moto Tai Chi Club but out here in the High Dessert.
The Unit above is the TURQ 'Base';
The next one bill be a TURQ 'Coach' which will be an inline two seater,
There will be a TURQ Truck or TRUQ with a rear cargo bin,
I also think there should be a TURQ+ but much will change over time.
The Key here is to have more control over some important choices for an individual's personal mobility freedom. This product is a contemporary "NEED" by individuals to have more access to our lands and space here in the 3D. I'm committed to holding onto this "Tech" and improving upon it tremendously, outside of the restrictions brought on by "Authoritative Figures" in positions of "Power." The "Cycling" connection will legitimize this and assist in these efforts.

Great design and upgrade options since they are using off the shelf mountain bike accessories. 🖖
Exactly!
Because its Biking, i expect to be able to have the local Schools have children designing, building, and using these things rather than having an undependable supply chain tied to China or India. I used to learn Welding and Steelworks in JR High... Shouldnt be a problem for kids around here to be producing before long. In the memetime The Rig is a great StarT.
Essentially like owning a Horse 🥓
Good point regarding the local school kids, seems like their were far more vocational options available in schools when I was growing up too... way lacking these days.
Horses are great, but are way more work and expense to upkeep for sure. 🖖
