I like watching movies, and yesterday I wrote about how I ended up watching "Dune: Part Two" in the cinema a couple of days ago. Well, since then I have been to the cinema once again, and this time I went to watch the movie "The Holdovers." This movie has been nominated for five Oscar statues, so I had high expectations, and it was one of the movies I have been looking forward to watching.
Many people have compared it to movies such as "Dead Poets Society" and other classics, meaning that besides being a great movie, also has a message and something it tries to communicate.
Paul Giamatti is nominated to an Oscar for best male actor in his role as the teacher Paul Hunham. He is really doing a fantastic job in the movie, so I wouldn't mind if he won an Oscar for the role. Of course, he didn't make an impression in the same way as Austin Butler did in his role as Elvis (for which he didn't win an Oscar), nor in the same way Joaquin Phoenix did in his role as the Joker (for which he won an Oscar), but he is still awesome in the role!
What is The Holdovers about?
At this boarding school, everyone goes home for Christmas, but there are normally a couple of exceptions. This year, the student Angus Tully expected to go home, but ends up left in the school together with the hated teacher, Paul Hunham. This is the core of the story, and with this relationship, it is doomed to be the worst Christmas ever. But, why are these two persons so bad, and why is the combination even worse?
It is so easy to judge people, but once you get to see what is behind the curtain, you will suddenly see that there is a story and a reason for everything. And yes, that is kind of what I brought with me home after watching the movie (together with other ideas and thoughts).
This is a movie with value, and great acting. It isn't packed with action, and I fear my teenage kids would be extremely bored watching it... but if you have 90 minutes to spare and feel ready to watch a movie with value and class, this might very well be it!
