The red house, was the home of William Morris and the birthplace of the arts and crafts movement. Morris commissioned a young architect Phillip Webb to build this house and although primarily a family home, the intention was always spend time and work there with his many artist friends. Not being able to find any furniture he liked he got Webb to also design the furniture to fit the gothic style of the house, as a group the artists hand painted the walls and furniture and it gave them the idea to start creating their own designs for others to decorate their homes. They created the company Morris and Co also known as the firms and started producing designs to be used as wallpaper and fabrics.
