My Chrystal Apple Cucumber

In a previous post I mentioned the planting of my "Chrystal Apple" cucumber - a different variety that produces round, creamy yellow cucumbers. This is a variety that I have never grown before.

I am amazed how quickly the plants have grown - I have already started to tie them upwards so that they can put out their tendrils and climb up the bamboo stakes that I have put in the container.

I do know that cucumbers often get powdery mildew, so am holding thumbs that mine don't. They are planted in a container with lots of compost and I water them every morning as these are thirsty plants and it is important that they get sufficient water in order to develop well.

By tying them upwards the leaves are kept off the soil so that no diseases get splashed on to the plants when watering. It is important to water the plants from the bottom to avoid this and also discourage any powdery mildew from forming.

As you can see from the image below, they are looking great at this stage so I hope they continue to do so as they develop.
