I have only come in contact with a few people that dislike the scent of lavender, but for myself, I love it. However, whether you like it or dislike it, lavender is well worth having in your garden and looks amazing when it is in full flower.
Some people say that their lavender always seems to die after a time and then say they will not plant it again. If you want to keep lavender bushes looking good, there are a few things that must be taken into consideration.
Firstly, the soil - although most lavenders will grow in most soils, they prefer a well drained fertile soil.
Plant your lavender in a sunny position as if in too much shade, there will be less flowers.
When it comes to feeding, just use good organic compost and keep the soil mulched in order to conserve moisture.
Newly planted bushes always look good and this is the time to keep them in a good shape.
Pick the flowers regularly - the more you pick, the more you will get. As you pick the flowers, trim any branches that are looking a bit straggly.
Most people make the mistake of never trimming their bushes and they allow them to grow tall with thick woody branches and then hack them down and wonder why the bushes then die.
These plants do not like to be pruned in this way - just keep trimming the bushes from the beginning and your lavender will grow beautifully.
Water the plants in the morning - a good deep watering once a week should be fine.
