Hello everyone.
On my last trip to Mostar and southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina I visited couple places for the first time.
During this trip along the road near our place where we stayed we saw fortress on the hill.
Of course we stopped by and went to explore the fortress.
It is called Tvrđava Merdžan glava or Fortress Merdžan head.
It is one of the military fortresses built around city Mostar by Austro Hungarians.
Lovely location with mountain Velež on one side and city Mostar on other. There is wind turbines field in proximity.
After we saw the fortress we stopped our cars nearby and walked up to the fortress.
As I remember it was 7-8 minutes walk to the fortress. And surrounding rocks and stones as well as this road builds up the expectations as you get closer.
And finally we reach Tvrđava Merdžan glava.
Fortress was military fortress. There was other fortresses around the city. When I looked up the photos from other fortresses they have the same built as this fortress. It is built on 802 meters above sea level. And city Mostar is 60 meters above sea level.
On one side fortress looks at this Wind field.
On the back side is mountain Velež. It reaches height of 1900 meters above sea level.
And this side is faced to the city Mostar. Lovely sight and ladnscape.
Some parts of the fortress are broken and in ruins.
Construction details are visible. Arched lintel with stones. You can see it in windows and doors in stone buildings.
Small openings on this side of fortress.
Inner parts of the fortress.
This visit to Merdžan Glava fortress was not planned but it was interesting to explore it.
It was good decision for sure.
