Hello Blurt Community! Last Lent in our country, we visited Intramuros, Spanish for "within the walls". It is a walled area in Manila built during the Spanish colonial times and home to two old churches. Some of the structures and houses in the area preserved the look during that era. The place takes you back in time from the old houses, horse drawn carriages and uniformed guardia civil (Spanish era law enforcers).
Our first stop was the San Agustin Church which was built in the 1600s. Unfortunately, the church was closed and we just had to take photos outside. There were a lot of tourists in the area who also wanted to get inside the church.
A few minutes walk took us to the Manila Cathedral, another old church built in the 1500s.
The list of Manila Archbishops going back to 1579 to the present. Ironic and funny that one of them was named Cardinal Sin, archbishop from 1974 - 2003.
After we're done with the church, it was time to walk around Intramuros. Just beside the Manila Cathedral was the Palacio del Governador. In this site the governor general lived when the Philippines was a Spanish colony.
We walked on the walls to have a better view of the Intramuros area. We walked in the direction of schools Mapua University, Lyceum College and Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
The Lyceum College, a school in Intramuros founded by the third president, Jose Laurel.
Colegio de San Juan de Letran founded in 1620 was the school of the finest minds in the country during the Spanish colonial era including Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Apolinario Mabini and Emilio Aguinaldo, the country's first president.
It was a hot and humid day for walking but we had a lot of fun touring the area.
