I just watched the new movie from Netflix this weekend, Rebel Ridge. It's about an ex-military who was a victim of small town cops' corruption. The movie starts when our main character was bringing money to bail his cousin. He encounters some cops who takes the money. What follows is the MC's attempt to recover the cash but when his cousin dies in prison it became his quest to expose corruption.
The movie's premise is familiar. It has social commentary about social injustice and corruption. Also, we have often seen the lone military expert against a bunch of enemies. When I was watching the movie, it reminded me so much of Jack Reacher (Amazon series). One guy, like a drifter who was unfortunately thrust against criminals and he has to apply his military skills to beat the odds and survive.
Another movie that I can compare to this is Sylvester Stallone's First Blood. Granted Rebel Ridge is less violent and has less body count than the other two. Only the main character's cousin died to move the plot along.
This is the first time for Aaron Pierre who played the main character to lead a movie. He played the character so well that this could be a break out role for him (he is rumored to play DCU's Green Lantern). Other actors are Don Johnson from the Miami Vice series and Ana Sophia Robb who I last saw as a child in Bridge to Terabithia.
Rebel Ridge is one the best movies to come out this September and I recommend you to watch it. I hope they would make sequels as I'd like to see more of the character played by Aaron Pierre. On the other hand, I was a bit surprised and annoyed that movie ended abruptly.
