Our Trip to Empuriabrava, Spain

Hello dear travel enthusiasts. Today I want to talk about our trip to a town called Empuriabrava. It is known as the local Venice. And here there are canals where you can park your boats right in front of your house. For example, you can park your own boat or motorboat and perhaps something even bigger.

A hundred years ago, no one knew about this town. It was only interesting to fishermen. This area was important for those who wanted to sail out and fish. But now there are many private properties here where you can reach your home not only by car but also by boat.

First we visited Empuriabrava's large and wide beach. It's an incredibly beautiful beach. There is also a sports area nearby with exercise equipment. And there is a space for playing games. When we visited, there was a small group playing there. We watched them curiously for a while. According to the rules, the yellow ball is placed in the middle and I think someone hits it to start the game. There are four fields here and two of them were in use.

We stopped by an office along the way and checked out real estate listings. There are quite affordable apartments in Empuriabrava. Compared to Barcelona, the prices are very reasonable. There were also listings for yacht rentals and sales. For example, a yacht could be sold for 33.000 euros. If you'd like to rent one, you can rent a 5-person boat for 275 euros in the summer. In the winter the price is 225 euros. A bigger boat for 8 people costs 550 euros per day in the summer. Of course, filling the yacht and maintaining it also come with extra costs. Apparently, there is no captain on these yachts. If you want a captain, you may need to pay an additional fee.

We wandered around the streets for a bit, then the weather changed. Just an hour after the sunny weather in Empuriabrava, it became cloudy and the wind picked up. Still we wanted to explore this town more because the canal system here is quite unique. This system makes Empuriabrava completely different from other Spanish towns.

The population of this town differs greatly between winter and summer. In winter about 5.000 people live here, while in summer, that number increases several times. It's very quiet here right now. You can park your car at the beach and there are no people around. There are many empty spots in the streets and restaurants. But since it’s not the season, not all restaurants are open.

Here is a typical street in Empuriabrava. You can reach it by both car and boat. Every house has its own canal. Unfortunately, not everything was as beautiful as we expected because the sun disappeared and clouds appeared.

Despite the weather, we continued our town tour. These houses can be accessed by boat. On another street, there are houses that can be reached by car. We walked a bit further, passed by a club and also saw a pizzeria, a nice restaurant and terraces with beautiful views. This town is known as the "Spanish Venice" because there are many canals here. No matter which street you go down, you will always encounter a canal and many boats. The dense canal network, over 37 kilometers long, connects the entire town.

There are fewer roads here, but many more canals. This town is 150 km away from Barcelona. We walked a bit more. The trees still had green leaves and the air had a bit of an autumn feel, even though it’s already late December. This town is relatively new. Almost nothing existed here 40 years ago. There aren’t many tourist attractions. But the town is in a great location. Historical cities like Figueres, where Salvador Dalí was born and Girona are nearby. And there are many medieval towns you can visit with fascinating history.

I'm so sorry that there was no sun today and I had to show you the gray images. The sun disappeared. But next time, I'll come back and show you the town on a sunny day because there is really a lot to see here. That’s all for today. I’m sending you hugs 🤗 and see you next time.
