Aunque ambas forman parte de la cirugía plástica, la cirugía estética y la cirugía reconstructiva tienen objetivos distintos. Las cirugías estéticas tienen el objetivo principal de cambiar ciertos puntos de la apariencia física de una persona, generalmente es electiva y se realiza por deseo personal, porque el paciente quiere mejorar su apariencia de manera estética al no encontrar satisfactorias ciertas características físicas, como por ejemplo, rinoplastia, aumento de senos, lifting facial.
La cirugía reconstructiva tiene como propósito principal el restaurar la forma y función de ciertas partes del cuerpo que han sido dañadas por accidentes, enfermedades, defectos congénitos y cirugías previas, como, por ejemplo: reemplazo de tejidos por quemaduras, recontrucción luego de una mastectomía, corrección del paladar hendido y labio leporino.

En esta publicación me centraré en la cirugía estética y su evolución, pues esta refleja la continua fascinación de la humanidad con la imagen corporal y la belleza. Desde las antiguas prácticas reconstructivas hasta la sofisticada cirugía plástica moderna, este campo ha ido más allá de la mera apariencia, tocando aspectos profundos de identidad, autoestima y la relación entre el cuerpo y la sociedad. Aunque la cirugía estética es accesible para una gran parte de la población y trae consigo debates éticos así como sociales, no se puede negar que ha transformado la manera en que las personas ven y modifican su apariencia.
En muchos casos, estas intervenciones quirúrgicas son vistas como una vía para obtener confianza personal y elevar la autoestima, sin embargo, detrás de esta búsqueda de belleza también se encuentran presiones culturales que dictan lo que se considera atractivo o deseable, situación que entristece y preocupa a la comunidad médica consciente porque todo gira en torno a lo que vemos, al estereotipo, sin mencionar el aumento de sitios clandestinos que no brindan las seguridades necesarias para este tipo de procedimientos que pueden llevar a alguien a la muerte incluso dentro de los quirófanos.
Las personas por ahorrarse unos cuantos pesos (euros, dólares, criptomonedas, etc.) recurren a estos lugares en donde hay poco o nulo profesionalismo, lo que provoca un sinnúmero de situaciones complejas cuando el paciente queda vivo.
Es interesante notar cómo el estándar de belleza ha cambiado a lo largo del tiempo, influenciado por los medios de comunicación, las celebridades y ahora, las redes sociales. Las cirugías estéticas pueden ser una forma de empoderamiento, pero también pueden ser una respuesta a la inseguridad generada por esos estándares inalcanzables. Lo que en un principio puede parecer una decisión personal, muchas veces está condicionado por expectativas sociales, tanto explícitas como implícitas.
Hay quienes optan por procedimientos estéticos para corregir algo que les incomoda profundamente, mientras que otros ven en ellas una oportunidad para expresar su individualidad, sin embargo, también surge la cuestión de cuándo esta búsqueda se vuelve excesiva o insostenible, afectando no solo la salud física, sino también la salud mental.
Por otro lado, es fundamental no juzgar las elecciones personales, ya que cada quien tiene derecho a decidir cómo quiere verse y sentirse en su propia piel, pero lo importante es que esa decisión sea informada y consciente, alejada de las imposiciones externas y hecha desde un lugar de autocomprensión y amor propio.
Al final, la reflexión sobre las cirugías estéticas nos lleva a cuestionar hasta qué punto estamos conformes con nosotros mismos y cómo podemos aprender a aceptar nuestras diferencias como parte de nuestra identidad, sin necesariamente depender de la aprobación externa.

In this post I will focus on cosmetic surgery and its evolution, as it reflects humanity's continuing fascination with body image and beauty. Cosmetic surgery can be a form of empowerment, but it can also be a response to the insecurity generated by these unattainable standards. What may initially seem like a personal decision is often conditioned by social expectations, both explicit and implicit.
There are those who opt for cosmetic procedures to correct something that deeply bothers them, while others see in them an opportunity to express their individuality. However, the question also arises as to when this search becomes excessive or unsustainable, affecting not only physical health, but also mental health.
On the other hand, it is essential not to judge personal choices, since everyone has the right to decide how they want to look and feel in their own skin, but the important thing is that this decision is informed and conscious, far from external impositions and made from a place of self-understanding and self-love.
In the end, reflection on cosmetic surgeries leads us to question to what extent we are satisfied with ourselves and how we can learn to accept our differences as part of our identity, without necessarily depending on external approval.
Let us love ourselves without seeking the approval of third parties.
