The 1991 movie Point Break, one of the best crime-thrillers of its time, combining crime, loyalty, friendship and a deep passion for freedom, is one of the most unforgettable movies of my time.
But today's topic is not that movie, but the remake of Point Break, which will remind you of that movie with many scenes and its original title.
I'm not against remakes of well-made and memorable original stories adapted to the present day after all this time has passed, but I think it's important to remember that unless it achieves the same success, it will remain in the shadow of the original movie.
In general terms, I can say that the original story is faithful to the original story, but the fact that it tries to draw a new path with new additions is something we often encounter during the viewing.
In both films, the theme of extreme sports is used as a philosophy of life and presented as a journey that rests and purifies the soul. I can say that the characters successfully reflect their passions, but if you ask which one is the best, I have to say that the original movie is far ahead.
The themes of crime and friendship are joined in the new version by a spiritual quest and environmental awareness, but I personally found the way environmental awareness was used and portrayed rather fake. I think this is due to the fact that the characters are not able to handle the innovative approach well enough. If you don't believe in something you don't believe in enough, you will have a hard time telling people about it and your sincerity will be tested.
The new elements that were added to the story didn't add enough depth and sincerity to the innovative approach that was intended and the story remained dull as a more superficial narrative. I don't include the passion in the extreme sports because I think the best thing they did was to live and reflect that passion.
When I compare the performances of the actors, there are serious differences, but I would say that this is a general problem of cinema. Comparing a character from 1991 to a character from 2015 would not be appropriate for the changing human profile, so I choose to skim the surface. The fact that characters in older productions are more effective and successful in expressing and reflecting their emotions is already evident in many productions, and I leave the general evaluation of this issue to you.
I should mention that the strongest aspect of the movie other than the passion for sports is the action scenes because the extreme scenes such as surfing, paragliding, wingsuit flying were breathtaking.
The friendship and loyalty through extreme sports was one of the biggest pros of the previous movie, but it is one of the cons of the new version, because I don't feel that friendship and loyalty are sincere enough.
Although Point Break is a visual feast, it is overshadowed by the strong character stances of the previous movie. The lack of a similar character development and the lack of emotional intensity, friendship and loyalty stands out as a minus. Still, I can say that it is above average in terms of watchability and has breathtaking scenes.
Thank you for being here and reading. Take care and goodbye!
