The mid to late 1990s saw a number of quality cop and crime dramas including LA Confidential and A Brooklyn Tale. This is an underrated crime drama you need to see, and I missed it in the late 1990s myself.
This film features Sylvester Stallone as a small town cop who yearns to be NYPD by cannot make the grade due to deafness in an ear. He ends up running into crooked cops who are shielding a man who's death was faked to escape justice. Stallone does a great job, and plays a humble role as an everyday person in an extraordinary situation.
This film features Robert Deniro, Ray Liota and Stallone in the lead. It's a great cast and the film is fun and engaging.

This is one I can't remember if I have seen or not, but I don't care to see it. Not into Stallone, nor cop movies, nor crime dramas. You have suggested so many other good movies I haven't had a chance to get through yet, I'm relieved when I don't have another to add to the growing list : P
It's good for the fact that Stallone plays a humble role. I'm about to suggest another classic you may have seen.
