Frankenstein is a classic film from 1931 that is a classic black and white masterpiece of terror. The film features a well curated warning before it begins to the audience about the horror within the film, which was customary during films in this time period up until the 1960s.
Sometimes you need to go back to the classics. This film is well done for the 1930s, and is largely devoid of gore or special effects. It's atmospheric and very professional. Horror evolved, or devolved depending on the era, into gore and slasher flicks filled with sex.
