Coffee has always been a source of inspiration for many people. It is enough to know that when you wake up, you will enjoy a cup of hot coffee before starting your work day to take a few minutes of pleasure and start the day right.
Some people become so abstracted with each sip of coffee that they can find the solution to some problems. Others get inspired and write eloquent financial reports, poems or songs. While others tend to experiment with the flavors and aromas of coffee, if not ask the baristas or chefs whose original creations surprise many palates.
But, what extent can coffee be linked to artistic expressions such as the visual arts?
It seems for coffee lovers with an artistic streak, there are no limits to creating interesting pieces of art. I have been to art exhibitions where there are pictures painted with coffee grounds. These are real works of art.
On a trip to the Caribbean, I visited a small gallery of local artists. The exhibition was based on works inspired by coffee. Among several of them, I found a couple that caught my attention.
This is a painting with a mixed technique between painting and collage with coffee beans. Of course, the piece have a double intention, the author's and the viewer's interpretation. For me, this piece speaks of femininity. Coffee as a source of life. Perhaps? In fact, many cities owe their economic survival to the cultivation and trade of coffee, where many of the tasks of harvesting, roasting, and grinding are done by women, while the men dedicate themselves to more physically demanding tasks.
It is beautiful to see in this painting how coffee beans can represent emotions in those who drink their beverage through the heart that can be seen in the piece. Also the aspect of pleasure that coffee can offer as the beans make their way through the digestive tract, highlighting the intensity of the flavor and aroma of this beverage.
The fetus formed with the coffee beans caught my attention. Perhaps it can speak of the romances that are born from a coffee. Maybe the aroma of childhood that our unconscious sometimes evokes when we were babies in some family kitchen preparing this drink. Who knows? art is subjective.
Another piece that caught my eye was this wire moka pot. I thought it was genius!
This piece speaks to the creativity of the artist to use different materials in one piece. Unfortunately, this piece was hanging from the ceiling and I could not find the artist's name tag. I apologize for that!
The interesting aspect is the swing inside the glass jar with the coffee beans. For me, the image of the swing is associated with fun, a sense of freedom, evocation of childhood, pleasurable sensations. Personally, the glass jar gives me the feeling of a dome. An intimate space between the coffee and the person enjoying it. I would call this space "coffee and me".
After seeing this exhibition and these two pieces of art, it is clear to me that there are societies (such as those in the Caribbean) where coffee is a drink that runs through their veins. A drink that is linked to family and childhood memories. It's nice to see the idiosyncrasies of some peoples through their art, and what better way to express that art than through coffee, don't you think?
