Haor located in the northeastern region of Bangladesh, spread over Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas of Sunamganj district, is one of the largest wetlands in the country and a significant biodiversity reserve. It is well known not only because of its beauty but also because of its biodiversity importance. Tanguar Haor was declared a 'Ramsar Site' in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh, thereby recognizing its ecological importance internationally. Introduction of Tanguar Haor Tanguar Haor is a large wetland spread over an area of ​​about 10,000 hectares. Haorti takes different forms at different times of the year. Its beauty becomes more mesmerizing during monsoons, when it takes the form of a vast ocean. When the Haor water dries up in winter, the surrounding area looks like a small island. Haor becomes a major refuge for migratory birds during the winter season, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers. Topography and Ecology The topography of Haor in Tangua is particularly attractive. Its main attraction is its clear water lakes and sprawling greenery. There are about 40 villages within Haor, which blend with the natural beauty of Haor. Haor is surrounded by the hills of Meghalaya, which create a mesmerizing scene. The large area of ​​Haor is covered with various species of aquatic plants, which not only enhance the beauty of Haor, but are also very important for its biodiversity. Tanguar Haor becomes a great bird sanctuary especially in winter. Millions of migratory birds from Siberia, China, Mongolia come here every year in winter. More than 200 species of birds are found here. Prominent among them are Baldhans, Lalshir, Chakhachkhi, Pankauri, Gangchil, Pati Sarali etc. Besides, Tanguar is also famous for haor fish. About 140 species of fish are found here. Especially indigenous species of fish such as Rui, Katla, Mrigel, Boal, Punti etc. are seen in abundance.

Ecological Importance of Tanguar Haor Tanguar Haor plays a very important role in protecting the ecological balance of Bangladesh. As it plays a role in climate regulation, it also helps in conservation of local biodiversity. In addition, Haor-centric tourism has also become a major part of the local economy. Many tourists come here during winters to watch migratory birds and take boat trips. The beauty of Tangua Haor becomes absolutely magnificent especially during the monsoon season, which attracts many tourists.

A trip to Tanguare Haor is a wonderful boating experience. During monsoons, it is not possible to enjoy the beauty of Haor without a boat. The green fields around, the hills of Meghalaya in the distance, flocks of sand ducks floating in the water—all together create a charming atmosphere. Tourists usually travel to Tanguare Haor by hiring a boat from Tahirpur. Larger boats are available for hire, offering day trips as well as overnight stays. These boats have enough food and rest facilities for tourists. For those who want to enjoy the beauty of Tangua Haor, winter or rainy season is the best time. Migratory birds congregate here in winter, creating a spectacular sight. On the other hand, during the rainy season, the natural form of the haor becomes magnificent. All around is water and water, as far as the eye can see, only water.

Environmental Challenges of Tanguar Haor.

Just as Tanguar Haor is a unique gem of nature, it also faces various environmental challenges. Firstly, conservation of Haor's wetlands and biodiversity is very important. Over-fishing, over-exploitation of aquatic plants and misuse of natural resources are threatening the ecology of Haor. Secondly, water pollution of Haor is a major problem. Chemicals used in agriculture and industrial wastes are degrading the water quality of Haor. Due to this, the habitat of aquatic animals is threatened and the number of migratory birds is also decreasing. Tourism has also become a challenge. Unplanned tourism and overuse of boats are having a negative impact on the biodiversity of Haor. The practice of sustainable tourism is very important to protect the environment of Haor.
