The magnificent Virupaksha Temple, Hampi

Namaste friends! My husband Sunil and I recently made a memorable trip to Hampi, the historically and architecturally famous city that was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the state of Karnataka, South India, between the 13th and the 16th centuries. Hampi, unfortunately, was almost completely ruined by the Mughal invaders in the year 1565. Most of the temples in Hampi, which were considered architectural marvels, were destroyed by Mughal soldiers who deliberately disfigured the beautiful sculptures in those temples. This is a sad historical truth. But surprisingly, only the Virupaksha Temple remained untouched by the Mughal soldiers.

I am hereby presenting to you some of the photos we captured while at the Virupaksha Temple. I hope you will find the beauty of the temple's architecture as admirable as we do!

- Rekha Sunil
