A beautiful day at the beach
The sun had not yet fully risen, the sky was red. A light, cool breeze was blowing, as if speaking its own invisible language with the roar of the sea. My daughter, little Reshmi, and I had come to the beach together.
Reshmi was very excited. She was running on the sand with her tiny feet, feeling the touch of the soft sand with her bare feet. I was walking slowly, feeling the vastness of the sea. The waves seemed to be coming and going in a rhythmic rhythm, crashing against the shore, returning, and coming again. This scene was familiar, yet it seemed new every time.
Reshmi ran up to me and grabbed my hand and said, "Mom, look, what a beautiful fish shell!" I bent down and saw a small oyster glistening in her hand. It shimmered silver in the sunlight. I smiled, "It's very beautiful, do you want to collect it?"
She nodded, "Yes, we will collect many, Mom!"
I started looking for oysters with her. Some were small, some were big, some were broken but colorful. Reshmi found them and filled her little bag. Then she suddenly ran towards the sea. I warned her, "Don't go far, Reshmi!"
She stood near the water and started playing with the small waves. I went to the side and held her hand. The waves came, touched the water around our feet, then moved away again. Reshmi laughed, as if she had reached a strange understanding with nature.
A little later, we sat down under a coconut tree by the beach. There was a small shop there, where coconut water was sold. I bought coconuts for both of us. After drinking the cold sweet water, Reshmi opened her eyes with joy and said, "This is so much fun, mom!"
Then we continued walking on the beach. Many tourists had come, some were taking pictures, some were riding horses, and some were surfing. Resmi and I sat in the sand and watched a group of children building a sandcastle in the distance. Resmi said, “Mom, we’ll build one too!”
I said, “Come on, let’s start then!”
We started building the sandcastle. Resmi was building the walls on one side, I was building the door. She was working very carefully, sometimes making designs on the fort with her hands. Eventually our fort was built—like a beautiful little palace.
Just then, a big wave came, breaking one side of our fort. Resmi looked at it with a heavy face. I said, “It’s a game of the sea, it wants to play with us!”
She smiled, “Then I’ll build it again, Mom!”
We started again. Our fort was stronger this time. Time seemed to fly by, I didn’t realize it. The sun was already setting in the west, the sky was painted orange and pink. The reflection of that color in the sea water looked so beautiful that it seemed as if a part of the rainbow was floating in the water.
Reshmi put her head on my shoulder and said, "I really liked today, Mom. Will we come again?"
I patted her head and said, "Of course, Reshmi! We will come again, build new sandcastles again, and talk to the sea again."
Evening came, and we slowly started to leave the beach. The air still smelled salty, and our minds still had the memories of the whole day's joy. The waves of the sea waved goodbye to us from behind, as if saying—"Come again!"
