Mientras guardaba el celular en la cartera, luego de archivar su mensaje para conservar pruebas o evidencias en alguna pelea futura con mi hermano mayor, me reí de tal manera que contagié a mi esposo, tanto, que él prefirió aparcar el auto a pocos metros de llegar a nuestro departamento.

As I put my phone in my purse, after archiving the message to preserve proof or evidence in a future fight with my older brother, I laughed so hard that I infected my husband, so much so that he preferred to park the car a few meters from reaching our apartment.

Quería retroceder el tiempo para volver a la casa de mi crianza por lo menos un día para ver a mi hermano mayor no solo por vídeo llamada. Quería verlo para que me deseara mucho más que ese tipo de calamidades como la de esa noche a través del meme de un malévolo felino. Quería compartir con él mucho más que un buen vaso de leche con unas cuantas galletas Oreos porque él sabía que esas galletas son de las que más disfruto cuando soy presa de un goloso pecadillo.
I wanted to go back in time to go back to my childhood home for at least one day to see my older brother, not just through video calls. Phrases spread out of context, simplifications of complex issues and even misinformation disguised as humor that only lead to more misinformation and more disunity. Irony and sarcasm can be powerful tools, but they can also distort the original message and reinforce stereotypes or prejudices without the recipient questioning it. In this environment, it becomes easy to trivialize important problems or invalidate different opinions with a simple visual gesture.
Otro problema surge cuando las interacciones se reducen a compartir memes sin un verdadero intercambio de ideas. Las conversaciones se vuelven impersonales, perdiendo la riqueza del lenguaje y la profundidad del pensamiento. No todas las personas disfrutan de esta forma de comunicación, y es importante reconocer que el diálogo humano depende de las palabras, la escucha activa y la construcción de argumentos. A veces, una respuesta con un meme puede restarle valor a una conversación, cerrando la puerta a un intercambio significativo en lugar de fomentar la comprensión, puede generar distancia y malentendidos que acarrean peleas.
Another problem arises when interactions are reduced to sharing memes without a true exchange of ideas. Conversations become impersonal, losing the richness of language and depth of thought. También está el aspecto del respeto porque no todos se sienten cómodos con los memes o con el humor que pueden implicar, y es fundamental considerar esto en nuestras interacciones. Lo que para algunos puede ser gracioso, para otros puede ser ofensivo, indiferente o incluso molesto. Forzar la comunicación a través de memes sin tener en cuenta la preferencia del otro es una forma de imposición sutil, que ignora la diversidad de formas en las que cada persona elige expresarse. Así como valoramos la libertad de compartir contenido en internet, también debemos respetar a quienes prefieren un intercambio más tradicional, basado en el lenguaje y la argumentación.
There is also the aspect of respect because not everyone is comfortable with memes or the humor they may imply, and it is essential to consider this in our interactions. What may be funny to some, may be offensive, indifferent or even annoying to others. Forcing communication through memes without taking into account the preference of the other is a form of subtle imposition, which ignores the diversity of ways in which each person chooses to express themselves. Just as we value the freedom to share content on the internet, we must also respect those who prefer a more traditional exchange, based on language and argument.
Creo que medirse en el uso de memes no significa rechazarlos por completo, sino ser conscientes del espacio en el que los usamos y del impacto que pueden tener en la conversación. Hay momentos en los que pueden sumar, pero también hay situaciones en las que restan porque son capaces de romper relaciones interpersonales en vez de unirlas por una vaga transmisión de los mensajes.
I think that being measured in the use of memes does not mean rejecting them completely, but rather being aware of the space in which we use them and the impact they can have on the conversation. There are times when they can add value, but there are also situations in which they detract because they are capable of breaking interpersonal relationships instead of uniting them through a vague transmission of messages.
