Bogotá, una ciudad que hoy se levanta vibrante entre montañas andinas, tiene un origen que se entrelaza con la historia de los muiscas, una de las civilizaciones prehispánicas más avanzadas de Sudamérica. Antes de que los conquistadores llegaran, esta meseta estaba habitada por un pueblo que dominaba la agricultura, el comercio y el arte de la orfebrería en oro, dando origen a la legendaria historia de El Dorado.
El corazón de lo que hoy es Bogotá fue en su momento Bacatá, el principal asentamiento de los muiscas, gobernado por el zipa, quien tenía su centro de poder en Funza. Esta tierra fértil y llena de lagunas sagradas era considerada un lugar especial, rodeado de mitos y rituales que giraban en torno al oro y a sus dioses. Sin embargo, en 1538, la llegada de Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada marcó el inicio de una nueva era.
A diferencia de otras conquistas en América, la toma de Bacatá no se dio en una gran batalla campal, sino a través de estrategias y alianzas con tribus enemigas de los muiscas. Tras el sometimiento de los pobladores originarios, los españoles fundaron la ciudad el 6 de agosto de 1538, estableciendo un centro administrativo que, con el tiempo, se convirtió en la capital del Virreinato de la Nueva Granada. Las estructuras coloniales comenzaron a levantarse alrededor de la actual Plaza de Bolívar, donde se erigieron la iglesia y los edificios del poder español.
Con los años, Bogotá fue transformándose. De ser un pequeño asentamiento de calles empedradas y casas de adobe, pasó a convertirse en un importante centro de comercio, educación y cultura. A finales del siglo XVIII, la ciudad ya contaba con universidades y movimientos ilustrados que sembrarían la semilla de la independencia. En 1810, el grito de independencia resonó en sus calles, marcando el inicio de un proceso que culminaría con la formación de la República de Colombia.
Hoy, Bogotá es una metrópoli que no olvida sus raíces. En el centro histórico, La Candelaria, aún se pueden ver los vestigios de la época colonial, mientras que en los cerros tutelares, como Monserrate y Guadalupe, la naturaleza sigue siendo un recordatorio del espíritu sagrado que los muiscas veneraban. Bogotá, a city that today rises vibrantly among the Andean mountains, has an origin intertwined with the history of the Muisca, one of the most advanced pre-Hispanic civilizations in South America. Before the conquistadors arrived, this plateau was inhabited by a people who mastered agriculture, trade, and the art of goldsmithing, giving rise to the legendary story of El Dorado.
The heart of what is now Bogotá was once Bacatá, the main settlement of the Muisca, ruled by the Zipa, who had his center of power in Funza. This fertile land, filled with sacred lakes, was considered a special place, surrounded by myths and rituals revolving around gold and their gods. However, in 1538, the arrival of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada marked the beginning of a new era.
Unlike other conquests in the Americas, the capture of Bacatá did not occur in a great pitched battle, but rather through strategies and alliances with tribes hostile to the Muisca. After subduing the original settlers, the Spanish founded the city on August 6, 1538, establishing an administrative center that eventually became the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. Colonial structures began to rise around the current Plaza de Bolívar, where the church and Spanish power buildings were erected.
Over the years, Bogotá transformed. From a small settlement of cobblestone streets and adobe houses, it grew into an important center of commerce, education, and culture. By the end of the 18th century, the city already had universities and enlightenment movements that would sow the seeds of independence. In 1810, the cry for independence resonated in its streets, marking the beginning of a process that would culminate in the formation of the Republic of Colombia.

Arepas are also a fundamental part of Bogotá's cuisine. Although there are many varieties in Colombia, in Bogotá you can find arepas santandereanas, filled with meat and pork rinds; arepas boyacenses, made with cheese and yellow corn; and the traditional arepa blanca with butter and salt, perfect to accompany any meal.
