It was Saturday, our regular tradition of dinner at my in-laws. But, having left for a Singapore trip two days prior, this was perhaps the best chance we could ever get to skip tradition. Not too far from home, we thought we could finally try the restaurant in our building-exactly where we have always considered going but never did. The kids were especially excited about this change of plan. They practically hopped with joy walking toward the restaurant while fascinated by the colorful hoardings outside. The bright, zooming lights were like a painter's magic wand that dropped hues on the children's cheeks with glee and uncertainty, while they laughed and were eager to enter and explore. Upon entering, we were enchanted by the warm, luminous space, the fragrance of food being made, the soft snuggly light of the monster little plumped-out, waiting to invite you in for a comforting family meal. We entered to find our table set with sizzling hot pots, and while I thought I had died and gone to heaven, smelling all the fresh vegetables, succulent slices of meat, and broth was enough to put anyone in a cheerful frame of mind. The ambiance was chill but liveliness with my husband taking over the hot big ball.
After we entered that warm-and-inviting space, we were greeted by the soft glow of the restaurant's lights as well as the comforting smell of food being prepared. A live little place for at least a family meal. The sitting arrangement was around a small table. As I settled in and relaxed, the sizzling sound of the hot pot coming down in front of us sent a wave of excitement through the room. My mouth watered, as the strong aroma of fresh veggies, thin slices of meat, and simmering broth wafted towards me. It felt free-spirited but active, with my husband taking up the hot pot taking precautions while cooking as if he was in the kitchen at home. The children were ready to go, excitement dancing in their eyes, and watching their food cooking right before them. My youngest, who was especially swept up, picked up a piece of tofu and gleefully dropped it in the bubbling pot. He laughed when the tofu floated up to the surface, his infectious laugh echoing. We conversed and exchanged stories about our respective days: the inbuilt chorus of family life began. My eldest one being responsible placed all of the vegetables neatly on the side of the table, leading to systematic dipping of thinly sliced beef, pork, and fresh veggies into the pot. Each nibble was a perfect communion of flavors with sumptuous broth giving each of its savory touches.
