🇬🇧 | Shining Light: Light art festival honours Caspar David Friedrich

We'd carefully planned to arrive at the perfect "blue hour" moment that magical time when daylight fades and the light installations awaken. Camera gear packed, settings pre-adjusted, we were ready to capture Greifswald's transformation.

Yet as often happens with friends, our perfect timing became a humorous lesson in German punctuality. "We'll be there at 6:30 sharp!" we'd declared... only to find ourselves waiting, tripods set up, as our chronically laid-back companions strolled up a leisurely 15 minutes later. "But the light is perfect now!" I protested, to which they simply smiled and opened a thermos of glühwein. Some things, it seems, are more important than perfect lighting.

🇩🇪 | Shining Light: Lichtkunstfestival ehrt Caspar David Friedrich

Wir hatten penibel die Blaue Stunde für unsere Ankunft geplant jenen magischen Moment, wenn das Tageslicht schwindet und die Lichtkunst erwacht. Kameraausrüstung gepackt, Einstellungen vorbereitet, bereit für Greifswalds Verwandlung.

Doch wie so oft mit Freunden wurde unser perfekter Zeitplan zu einer amüsanten Lektion in deutscher Pünktlichkeit. "Wir sind um 18:30 Uhr da!", hatten wir verkündet... nur um dann mit aufgebauten Stativen zu warten, während unsere entspannten Begleiter gemütlich 15 Minuten zu spät ankamen. "Aber das Licht ist jetzt perfekt!", beschwerte ich mich - worauf sie nur lächelten und eine Thermoskanne Glühwein auspackten. Manches, so scheint es, ist wichtiger als das perfekte Foto.

🇬🇧 | Absorbed by Light

Absorbed by Light features three figures sitting on a bench, heads bowed, fingers swiping, their faces illuminated by their phone screens. While physically present, their thoughts are elsewhere. Designed by Gali May Lucas and executed by Karoline Hinz, this artwork invites viewers to step into the scene and experience the disconnection. Phones and screens, now an integral part of life, keep us constantly distracted. We are more engaged in the virtual world than in the reality around us. Lucas’s work highlights this painful truth, where we often lose touch with ourselves and our surroundings. Sometimes, I wonder, "Are we so dependent on our smartphones?" As I caught a part of the sunset, the art piece began to glow, adding to the moment’s surreal beauty.

🇩🇪 | Absorbed by Light

Absorbed by Light zeigt drei Figuren auf einer Bank, ihre Köpfe gebeugt, Finger am Tippen, ihre Gesichter von den Bildschirmen ihrer Handys erleuchtet. Körperlich anwesend, sind ihre Gedanken woanders. Das Kunstwerk von Gali May Lucas und Karoline Hinz lädt das Publikum ein, Teil der Szene zu werden und die Ablenkung durch Smartphones nachzuvollziehen. Die ständige Verbindung zur virtuellen Welt lenkt uns oft von der realen Welt und uns selbst ab ein schmerzlicher Punkt, den Lucas mit dieser Arbeit verdeutlicht. Manchmal stelle ich mir die Frage: „Sind wir so abhängig vom Smartphone?“ Als ich gerade einen Teil des Sonnenuntergangs einfing, begann das Kunstobjekt zu leuchten und verlieh dem Moment eine fast surreale Schönheit.

🇬🇧 | Fire!

There's something primal about fire that speaks to our very DNA. Animals instinctively flee its destructive power, yet we humans can't help but be drawn to its hypnotic dance. This paradox came alive at Vendel & De Wolf's Sign installation, where LED flames licked at the twilight sky with uncanny realism. The effect was mesmerizing - those flickering strips of light playing tricks on our ancient instincts, making us question whether to step closer or keep our distance.

The aluminum-wrapped bamboo poles stood like sentinels along the path, their reflective surfaces mirroring the reeds that sway through Friedrich's Swans in the Reeds. Much like the coastal beacons that once guided sailors before lighthouses existed, this artwork became both wayfinder and metaphor - illuminating not just physical paths, but the transformative power of art itself.

Capturing the perfect shot proved challenging. While I patiently waited for clear moments between visitors, others pushed through without hesitation. But the real magic happened when I experimented with long exposures - the artificial flames transformed into ethereal ribbons of light, blurring the line between destruction and rebirth in a single frame.

🇩🇪 | Feuer!

Feuer weckt etwas Urtümliches in uns. Während Tiere instinktiv vor seiner Zerstörungskraft fliehen, können wir Menschen uns seinem hypnotischen Tanz kaum entziehen. Dieses Paradox erlebten wir bei Vendel & De Wolfs Installation Sign - LED-Flammen, die mit unheimlicher Echtheit in den Abendhimmel züngelten. Die Wirkung war hypnotisch: Diese flackernden Lichtbänder spielten mit unseren Urinstinkten und ließen uns zwischen Nähertreten und Abstandhalten schwanken.

Die alubeschichteten Bambusstäbe säumten den Weg wie Wächter, ihre spiegelnden Oberflächen erinnerten an das Schilf aus Friedrichs Schwäne im Schilf. Wie die Küstenfeuer, die einst Seefahrer vor den Leuchttürmen leiteten, wurde dieses Kunstwerk sowohl Wegweiser als auch Sinnbild - es erhellte nicht nur reale Pfade, sondern auch die verwandelnde Kraft der Kunst.

Das perfekte Foto zu erwischen, war eine Herausforderung. Während ich geduldig auf lichte Momente zwischen den Besuchern wartete, drängelten andere unbekümmert durchs Bild. Doch der wahre Zauber entfaltete sich bei Langzeitbelichtungen: Die künstlichen Flammen verwandelten sich in ätherische Lichtbänder, die in einem einzigen Bild die Grenze zwischen Zerstörung und Neubeginn verwischten.

🇬🇧 | Birds Fly Around With You

Birds Fly Around With You is an interactive light sculpture that captivates both young and old. Inspired by the zoetrope, a machine that predates cinema, this installation involves a rotating disc. When viewed through a small slit, the viewer sees a figure that appears to be in motion.

As a visitor approaches the installation, the machine comes to life. The birds light up one by one, creating the illusion of flight. The more people gather around the artwork, the more birds take flight. This technical masterpiece was developed, designed, and programmed by Japanese artist Masamichi Shimada.

Seagulls often appear in the works of Friedrich, such as in the famous painting "Monk by the Sea" (1808-1810, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie). He meticulously documented their flight movements in his sketchbooks, like in the Karlsruhe Sketchbook (1804). Shimada seems to bring these studies to life, much like the optical wonder wheels from Friedrich’s time. Children had a blast running in circles, watching how the faster they ran, the faster the birds flew. It was a huge joy to watch.

Birds Fly Around With You ist eine interaktive Lichtskulptur, die Jung und Alt verzaubert. Die Installation basiert auf dem Zoetrop, einer Maschine, die dem Kino vorausging. In dieser Maschine wird eine Scheibe mit einer bestimmten Geschwindigkeit gedreht; wer durch einen kleinen Schlitz schaut, sieht eine Figur, die sich zu bewegen scheint.

Ein Besucher, der sich der Installation nähert, setzt die Maschine in Gang. Die Vögel leuchten einer nach dem anderen auf und erzeugen die Illusion, dass sie fliegen. Je mehr Menschen sich um das Kunstwerk bewegen, desto mehr Vögel fliegen. Dieses technische Meisterwerk wurde vom japanischen Künstler Masamichi Shimada entwickelt, entworfen und programmiert.

Immer wieder tauchen Möwen in Friedrichs Werken auf, so auch im berühmten Gemälde „Mönch am Meer“ (1808-1810, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie). In seinen Skizzenbüchern hielt er die Flugbewegungen der Vögel im Detail fest, zum Beispiel im Karlsruher Skizzenbuch (1804). Shimada scheint diese Studien in Bewegung zu setzen, ähnlich wie das optische Wunderrad zur Zeit Friedrichs. Die Kinder hatten sehr viel Spaß daran, wie schnell die Vögel flogen, je schneller sie im Kreis liefen. Es war ein riesiger Spaß, sich das anzusehen.

Illuminated laundry hanging on clotheslines, resembling a sunny summer day, showcases a mix of garments – blouses, t-shirts, underwear, trousers, dresses, and cultural pieces like a Turkish pair of trousers, a traditional Jewish dress, and a Moroccan djellaba. Together, these items represent the cultural diversity of the city’s inhabitants, adding a subtle yet striking touch to the urban landscape.

The clotheslines evoke a neighborly, warm feeling. Sergey Kim, the artist, highlights how globalization and information exchange often lead to a fear of the unfamiliar, isolating people in cities. By using the universal act of drying laundry, Sergey aims to send a message of harmonious coexistence.

Everything in Neighborhood shines – the clothes, clothespins, and even the clotheslines themselves. Sergey is intrigued by how light can transform everyday objects, turning something simple into a work of art.

Friedrich also captured the essence of everyday life in his drawings, such as “Two Tree Studies, Laundry on the Line” (1799), showcasing laundry hanging on a line, an image reflecting the simplicity and significance of such moments in daily life.

🇩🇪 | Beleuchtete Wäsche auf Wäscheleinen

Beleuchtete Wäsche auf Wäscheleinen, die an einen heißen Sommertag erinnern, zeigen eine Mischung aus Kleidungsstücken – Blusen, T-Shirts, Unterwäsche, Hosen, Kleider sowie kulturelle Stücke wie türkische Hosen, ein traditionelles jüdisches Kleid und eine marokkanische Djellaba. Diese Stücke spiegeln die kulturelle Vielfalt der Stadtbewohner wider und verleihen dem Stadtbild eine subtile, aber markante Note.

Die Wäscheleinen erzeugen ein nachbarschaftliches, warmes Gefühl. Sergey Kim, der Künstler, betont, wie Globalisierung und Informationsaustausch oft zur Isolierung führen und wir uns zunehmend vor dem Unbekannten fürchten. Mit der universellen Handlung des Wäschetrocknens möchte Sergey eine Botschaft des harmonischen Zusammenlebens senden.

Alles in Neighborhood strahlt Licht aus – von den Kleidungsstücken bis zu den Wäscheklammern und der Wäscheleine. Sergey ist fasziniert davon, wie Licht Alltagsgegenstände verwandeln und ihnen eine neue Bedeutung verleihen kann.

Friedrich hielt alltägliche Szenen in seinen Zeichnungen fest, wie in „Zwei Baumstudien, Wäsche auf der Leine“ (1799), wo Wäsche auf einer Leine hängt – ein einfaches, aber bedeutungsvolles Bild aus dem Leben.

🇬🇧 | Lorenz's butterfly effect

Six massive butterflies have landed on the landscape, their wings glowing blue in the dark night. At first glance, the artwork seems to depict a peaceful, almost magical scene. However, with his artwork "Butterfly Effect," Masamichi Shimada attempts to show how something as delicate as a butterfly can possess immense power.

Lorenz's butterfly effect is a metaphor that, while scientifically impossible, shows that daily life, the weather, or the stock market contains a certain level of unpredictability, and that chaos or crisis may be just around the corner.

The artwork was displayed at the museum harbor in Greifswald, where the maximum possible vantage point for photographing was reached. Unfortunately, no further angles were available, but it still worked out in the end. It was challenging to get a clear shot without too many people in the frame, but I made sure to capture the essence of the piece, trying to see how the artwork looked with a long exposure.

🇩🇪 | Lorenz'scher Schmetterlingseffekt

Sechs riesige Schmetterlinge haben sich auf der Landschaft niedergelassen, ihre Flügel leuchten blau in der dunklen Nacht. Auf den ersten Blick scheint das Kunstwerk eine friedliche, fast magische Szene darzustellen. Doch mit seinem Kunstwerk „Butterfly Effect“ möchte Masamichi Shimada zeigen, wie etwas so Zartes wie ein Schmetterling eine immense Kraft besitzen kann.

Lorenz‘ Schmetterlingseffekt ist eine Metapher, die zwar wissenschaftlich nicht möglich ist, aber zeigt, dass das tägliche Leben, das Wetter oder die Börse ein gewisses Maß an Unvorhersehbarkeit aufweisen und dass das Chaos oder die Krise immer vor der Tür steht.

Die Objekte waren am Museumshafen in Greifswald ausgestellt, wo der bestmögliche Blickwinkel für die Fotografie erreicht war. Weitere Perspektiven waren leider nicht möglich, aber es hat dennoch gut geklappt. Es war eine Herausforderung, ein klares Bild ohne zu viele Menschen im Hintergrund zu machen, aber ich habe versucht, die Essenz des Kunstwerks einzufangen, indem ich es mit einer Langzeitbelichtung ausprobiert habe.

The "Shining Light" exhibition in Greifswald proved to be a captivating blend of art, history, and modern technology. It was fascinating to see how light could transform ordinary objects into something extraordinary, while also drawing on the rich history of Caspar David Friedrich’s works. The installation, "Butterfly Effect," was a perfect representation of how small actions can have a large impact, a concept that resonated with me deeply. Despite the challenges of photographing with so many visitors around, I’m grateful for the opportunity to capture these beautiful moments. The event left me with a renewed appreciation for the powerful intersection of art, science, and the natural world.

Die Ausstellung „Shining Light“ in Greifswald war eine faszinierende Mischung aus Kunst, Geschichte und moderner Technologie. Es war beeindruckend zu sehen, wie Licht gewöhnliche Objekte in etwas Außergewöhnliches verwandeln kann und dabei auf die reiche Geschichte von Caspar David Friedrichs Werken zurückgreift. Die Installation „Butterfly Effect“ war eine perfekte Darstellung dafür, wie kleine Handlungen große Auswirkungen haben können ein Konzept, das mich tief berührt hat. Trotz der Herausforderung, mit so vielen Besuchern zu fotografieren, bin ich dankbar für die Gelegenheit, diese schönen Momente einzufangen. Die Veranstaltung hat mir eine neue Wertschätzung für die kraftvolle Verbindung von Kunst, Wissenschaft und der Natur vermittelt.
