Hello everyone
Today is my birthday, and to celebrate, my family and I decided to visit Wat Bang Thong in Ao Luek District, Krabi, to make merit. We left our home in Phuket around 6:30 AM, embarking on a journey of about 110 kilometers. The drive usually takes a little over two hours, but since we weren’t in a rush, we took our time, enjoying the ride. After approximately three hours, we finally arrived at the temple.

When we arrived at Wat Bang Thong, it was still early in the morning. The sky wasn’t particularly clear, as Thailand has been facing PM 2.5 air pollution, making the atmosphere a bit hazy. However, after a while, the sky began to brighten, revealing the temple’s breathtaking surroundings.
This spot is one of the most photographed areas of the temple, as it offers a stunning view of the Phra Mahathat Chedi. The design of this magnificent stupa is inspired by the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India, the sacred site where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Its grandeur and intricate details make it truly remarkable to behold.

The surrounding area is just as beautiful, with serene landscapes and intricate architectural details that add to the temple’s majestic atmosphere.

Before entering the temple, visitors must dress modestly and remove their shoes. I highly recommend wearing socks, as the tiles can get extremely hot, and walking barefoot might cause discomfort from the heat.
Inside, the atmosphere is serene and spiritual, with rows of Buddha statues in a meditative posture beautifully arranged throughout the temple hall.

Surrounding the main stupa, the temple grounds are equally impressive. The architecture blends traditional Thai elegance with intricate golden details, creating a peaceful and majestic atmosphere.
This section of the temple features rows of Buddha statues, carefully placed under beautifully adorned corridors. The combination of red and gold tones against the blue sky makes it a truly picturesque sight.

As we walked further into the temple grounds, we came across this majestic courtyard. The symmetry of the architecture, combined with the intricate details of the structures, made it feel truly grand and peaceful.
At the center stands a striking white statue, surrounded by beautifully decorated pillars and gates leading into the inner temple area. The contrast between the deep red and gold roofs against the bright blue sky made this view even more breathtaking.

Finally, we reached the heart of Wat Bang Thong—the Phra Mahathat Chedi. Standing tall with its golden exterior, this sacred structure is truly awe-inspiring. Its architectural design takes influence from the Mahabodhi Temple in India, creating a stunning connection to Buddhist history.
Up close, the details are even more breathtaking. The green and gold motifs, intricate carvings, and small Buddha alcoves make this structure a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Walking around, I couldn’t help but admire the grandeur and serenity that this temple radiates.

Today, my main purpose for visiting was to make merit and offer a ceremonial cloth to the Phra Mahathat Chedi. Near the entrance gate, there is a dedicated counter where temple staff assist Buddhist devotees who wish to participate in this meaningful tradition.

After receiving the ceremonial cloth, we first paid our respects to the Phra Phuttha Metta Kai Sit, the revered Buddha image. We placed flowers, incense, and candles as an offering, expressing our devotion and gratitude before proceeding with the merit-making ritual.

Next, a monk led us in prayer, chanting sacred verses as part of the merit-making ceremony. After the chanting concluded, we carefully wrapped the golden ceremonial cloth around the base of Phra Phuttha Metta Kai Sit. It is believed that this act of devotion brings blessings and success in one’s wishes and aspirations.

After completing the ceremony, we took a moment to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of the temple. The golden stupa stood tall against the blue sky, radiating a sense of tranquility and spiritual grace. It was a beautiful reminder of how faith and tradition continue to connect people across generations.
Visiting Wat Bang Thong was truly a meaningful experience for my birthday. Not only did I have the chance to make merit with my family, but I also felt a deep sense of calm and gratitude. Whether you come for the spiritual significance, the architectural beauty, or simply to soak in the serenity, this temple is a place that leaves a lasting impression.
If you ever find yourself in Krabi, I highly recommend making a stop here. It’s a place where you can pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of both faith and culture.
